Snowboarding in Alaska should be on everyone’s bucket list. The flight up is one of the most scenic, awe-inspiring journeys and the ride down the terrain that Alaska offers is even better. Whether it’s in-bounds at a resort or in the backcountry – there’s truly terrain for all ability levels. I’ve already done the backcountry snowboarding in Alaska during my Tailgate Alaska stint so I was very content with staying in-bounds just to explore Alyeska Resort on this trip. View from the tram looking over Girdwood I hopped a flight late Friday after the workweek, checked in my snowboard gear, and landed in Anchorage. Just a short drive later, I was arriving at the Alyeska Resort Hotel to start my weekend snowboard trip. I was traveling solo so I was very glad to have the help of the Alyeska staff to show me around the resort over the weekend. Woke up early Saturday to find blue skies, groomed corduroy, and a smile on my face. Top of the chairlift My tour guide around the mountain was Nicole who did a great job telling me about the terrain, snow this year, mountain features and what I had to check out while […]

One of my favorite places to visit has always been Bend, Oregon. The town is incredible; it’s full of breweries, people who love the outdoors, and a great mountain just down the highway. Mt Bachelor is pretty amazing, the lower mountain has an abundance of tree runs and groomers while the upper mountain above tree line has wide open steeps perfect for a powder day. Needless to say, I was really excited to visit again. We made it a weekend trip. Hopped a Horizon flight Friday night, rode Saturday, enjoyed town on Sunday and back home in Seattle Sunday night. Since it was raining in Seattle and sunny in Bend, it was the perfect opportunity to getaway to better weather. It really did deliver with the sunshine when we arrived. It hadn’t snowed in a couple days but that didn’t deter us from enjoying the mountain. We were really surprised that while it hadn’t snowed recently, the snow from the last storm was still plentiful in the trees. We ended up getting a couple laps with freshies on every run. All it took was just riding the trees to get it. All smiles for sunshine laps! While the mountain seemed […]

Years ago, I used to live in a quaint mountain town called Steamboat Springs, Colorado where I’d spend every day riding the local mountain. Even though it’s been over 10 years since I called Steamboat home, it’s one of my favorite places to visit because it holds a special spot near and dear to my heart. There’s still the favorite stashes, the local watering holes, and the amazing people who make up the community around the mountain. I’m lucky to return to my old stomping grounds at least once a year. Thanks to the direct flight from Seattle to Hayden, it was a 2 hour flight and 45 minute drive before we were slopeside at Steamboat Resort. We even enjoy a First Class upgrade on the way out. We arrived in the evening but that meant we’d be fully charged to hit the slopes the next day. It’s been a good year for Steamboat with the town receiving over 230″ of snowfall so far. It looked like we might be lucky with our trip and a storm rolling through but it shifted course on our last day in town. Even while there was no new snow, we did manage to […]

After exploring Lake Louise and spending the evening in Banff, I opted to ride Lake Louise Resort before I started my journey back home. By the time I reached the parking lot, the snow was falling and I was stoked to get on the mountain. I had purchased the mountain collective pass at SIA so this was a great chance to ride a new mountain and use a day on my pass. The snow conditions were hardpacked after having been through freeze thaws recently. It made for really fast conditions but icy in spots. Whenever you ride a new mountain, it’s just fun to ride different lifts and trails to see where you can go. I ended up on many groomers, a couple mogul runs (oops) and ducked into the trees when it looked good. The best part…was the views. Even on a snowy cloudy day, the surrounding peaks were impressive. This whole journey has been just amazing in terms of scenery. The Canadian Rockies really delivered and I look forward to returning to snowboard them again. I’ll definitely make a return visit to experience the mountain again but I opted to leave the mountain early to start the journey […]

One of the best rewards of traveling to new places is the feeling you get when you experience them for the first time. Arriving in Golden wasn’t much but arriving at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort was incredible. It was a good thing I was on the gondola alone because I couldn’t help but smile and laugh at what I was seeing surround me. This wasn’t just a ski resort, this was a ski resort in the Canadian Rockies. It made you feel so in awe, so humble and so tiny compared to the massive mountains that surrounded you when you stepped off the gondola. I couldn’t believe it took me 31 years to snowboard here. It certainly won’t be another 31 before I return… I followed the lines keeping to mostly blue and black runs, did corduroy laps in the morning and rode the trees when the snow softened up in the afternoon. I rode some steep stuff but didn’t do the hike-to terrain since I was riding alone and didn’t know the mountain conditions as well. Quite frankly the mountain intimidated me in a good way and I knew that I’d want to return to ride the really good […]

All it took was seven hours along a winding highway, over mountain passes and through the woods to get to Revelstoke Mountain Resort from Seattle. It was well worth the drive, even though it wasn’t having the best of snow seasons. This was my second time to Revelstoke. I had been here for Tailgate BC and made a point that I would return. All it took was a free ticket from TGR’s Ablaze film premiere to do the trick. Thank you TGR. Just as I remembered, Revelstoke is quite the mountain for top to bottom laps. The lower mountain was noticeably brown in spots from the lack of snow but the upper mountain held the snow in great condition. I stuck to Ripper and Stoke chair for the day. It was a great day to enjoy the views, groomed runs and sunshine. Luckily I had my green 686 snowboard pants on to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with. The night before I stayed at the Valley Retreat B&B and Ryan the host recommended corduroy laps on Ripper so I headed there early on to be one of the first to rip down the slopes. It was a good call since it […]

From late nights to early mornings, Snowcial is one of the most fun conferences for winter sports marketing. It was definitely good to be hanging back with familiar faces and friends for the weekend. Friday was a morning of presentations before hitting the slopes in the afternoon. Friday morning speakers were Greg Cannon from Caesars entertainment, Stanley Hainesworth from Tether, Christopher Steiner from Forbes, Patrick Harrington from Walmart Labs and Grant Korgan from Korg 3.0 Movement. The authentic, positive and amazing outlook from Grant Korgan really set the tone for the day. He had been seriously injured in a snowmobile accident, lost the use of his legs and has worked hard to accomplish all the same goals and create new ones. He spoke such sweet words about his wife, “She stood by me when her man couldn’t stand for himself” during the speech. After the presentations, I joined a crew for lunch before heading onto the slopes in the afternoon. It was super warm on the mountain and conditions were actually slushy. But it was a good day to be in the sun with a crew lapping the mountain before heading in for apres. For apres, we went to unbuckled […]

It’s been a busy last couple days of traveling but I finally made it to Lake Tahoe! It’s good to be back to return to the Snowcial Conference. My first stop was Sierra at Tahoe where I could spend the day lapping the mountain and getting my snowboard feet back under me. I have two friends that work at Sierra in marketing so it was good to catch up and see them for the day. Since it was midweek, there were no lines and I was able to just cruise around exploring until Steve was able to join me for laps at the end of the day. The conditions were hardpacked but definitely a deep base from the earlier snow that Tahoe had received. Towards the end of the day, Steven Hemphill joined me for a couple laps. He runs the PR at Sierra at Tahoe and is a super fun guy to be around. I tried to capture him on camera but he’s so dang fast unless he’s on a rail. Ended the afternoon with a much needed happy hour sushi stop before heading to Snowcial to check in for the conference. Good way to start the Lake Tahoe […]
