So I am in the process of adding a section to the snowboard reviews called “Shay’s Honesty Box” which will have the really honest opinion, including whether I would buy it or not and the dirt that people want to hear in a review. You guys asked for it and I am delivering it. I added little bits to the 08-09 reviews and future reviews will have more. For the real 08-09 snowboard reviews, check back next week…I’ll be putting up the entire list that will be the real reviews…not the rant reviews. I’ve always been one of those people that recognizes that I might hate a board or binding…but others love it. That conditions impact how a board handles and every board can have a bad day. As a rider I have bad days…towards the end of season my own riding is weaker, I just wanna take it easy and have fun…versus riding a board that’s going to haul and make me work for it. I try to save the hard charging boards for the early season and the easy, fun mellow rides for the end of season. So for those wanting the really uncensored Shay’s take, here it […]

So SIA started yesterday, Tuesday January 29th but I didn’t make it into Vegas until late last night. Luckily for me the weather cleared up and guaranteed that I could make it to Denver. Tom dropped me off at DIA just in time to catch a late flight to Vegas. It was a pretty tiring night so when I got to Vegas, checked into my hotel room and passed out before midnight. This morning started with just checking out friends who work for different companies and checking out the different gear for 2008-2009. Here are some Atomic pictures that I took while getting the scoop on the atomic gear coming out. Mike works for Atomic…he rocks and definitely looks ready to attack in this photo. This year I was stoked to see a couple companies that were attending SIA especially Spacecraft! Normally they just crash SIA stickering up love and joy throughout the tradeshow but this year it was just awesome to see them in a booth. Another company is Bitchboards, a girls up and coming brand. Last year Alex the owner sent out a board for me to review and give feedback on to apply to this years boards. […]

So with SIA rapidly approaching with 2008-2009 gear coming out…I figured it’d be a good idea to look back at my favorite gear from 2007-2008 that I had the opportunity to try out. My board review is hereMy binding review is here Powder The K2 Gyrator is amazing in powder. I took it out on hard packed and loved it so I knew on powder it’d be killer with the reverse camber. It’s also so damn butterable. I think this is the only board that I have ever demo’d where I went out and bought it right away because I was blown away by it. It is now my powder board and every day riding it in powder is just so much fun. Women’s The K2 Duchess is the best womens board I rode all year, definitely others that are solid boards but this one was such a fun board to hit the snow with. Most Shocking The Burton Uninc was definitely the most surprise/standout/shocking board that I demo’d. I mean that in a good way. I really enjoyed riding the uninc. I can’t say anything about the quality and durability of the EST but it was a really fun […]

I’ve owned 16 boards that I can remember…these are boards that I have bought or given to me for free. Boards I’ve owned from 95-00:This period of my life is when I was oblivious to anything I rode and really didn’t keep track either. I have some pictures but some photos I don’t have. It is funny to see the equipment that I started to learn to ride on compared to what you have now. Times have changed…but still riding. 1. Nitro No idea the model. Its the board in the middle, the blue Nitro. If anyone does know the model, please email me. This was really my first snowboard because I spent the most amount of time on it. It lasted me a couple seasons. 2. Ride board no idea what model. No pictures of this board at this time. 3. GNU Barrett Christy pro. No pictures of this board at this time. 4. Burton 5. Santa Cruz No idea the model even though I got the board in 2000. This board was great for developing with as a rider. It took me from intermediate to advanced riding and eventually got downgraded to my rock board. It was easy […]

Each review is judged by the same standard and for the majority of reviews I used my own boots (some exceptions). During demos I try to stick to riding the same size board of 157-159cm with the exception of some female boards which come in smaller sizes. I have the weight to back up riding a men’s board, however I do try to ride women’s boards in the longer lengths. About me as a snowboarder: I’m coming up on my 13th season snowboarding: 11 seasons in the NW and 2 seasons in Colorado. I am a freerider (I ride trees, powder, steeps, groomers, natural terrain) and I ride halfpipe. I am 5’6″ and typically ride a 158cm for my all mountain board, my powder board is a 161 or 164cm and my park board is a 155cm. I weigh about 200lbs give or take. I am a regular rider with a 22 inch width, +15, -15 stance angles. I wear size 8 womens snowboard boots. My opinion is only my opinion…of how these snowboards rode. Take it as you want.
A friend asked me to write up something on stance in my blog…so once I had time I figured it would be a good thing to post up with some pictures. Measuring Stance Width Stance Width is the distance between your bindings. To measure your stance width, it’s best to use a measuring tape from the center of each binding. Height does play a key role in stance width. Generally the taller you are, the longer the legs…the wider the stance. Today with a lot of the freestyle riding a wider stance is more common. If you want to test each, spend a day on the mountain with a narrow stance and a wide stance. For me, a wider stance offers more stability. If I ride too narrow a stance, I feel as though I have no torsional flex over the board. Stance width is all preference. Some people tell you to use your shoulder width to determine stance width but I determine stance width by how you stand in your athletic position (with your knees bent like you are snowboarding). If I used my shoulder width (19 inches) I wouldn’t be very comfortable compared to what I use when […]

If I ever found the perfect snowboard that was ideal for me…it was the Capita Black Snowboard of Death 2003-2004 season. It really deserves its own blog because I loved it. In the summer of 2003 I worked at Gregg’s Greenlake Cycles in their little tiny itsy bitsy snow board shop/skate shop. It was a really fun job while I was still living in Seattle and I met some really cool people during my time there. They knew about Capita as an up and coming company with this killer board that was going to rule all. After hearing about this awesome board coming out called the Black Snowboard of Death and seeing it in the upcoming product catalogs…I contacted Capita and inquired about instructor discounts (proforms) to be able to purchase the snowboard. After a couple emails back and forth, I received the okay to go to the Capita office and pick it up. My first time to Capita in late 2003 was trying to find the office hidden behind the old Drake office far back in the industrial district of Seattle. When I got there, I met Jason who took me into the office and got me the Capita […]
