Each winter they take the brunt of the season’s forces, their amazing venting or moisture wicking qualities have kept our feet warm and comfortable. They’ve endured countless washings/febreezings and held up over months/endless days. They’ve been great weapons to friends and they’ve always been there for you as long as you didn’t go the cotton route. [singlepic id=4891 w=400 h=300 float=] It’s time to go through the sock drawer and see what matches up, what has holes in it and what needs to be thrown out. But this year when you throw out your sock, think of the sock…and how you could give it more meaning. Send your old socks to eesa’s SOS (saving old socks) program and they’ll find a use for them, cleaning up oil spills to being ground down for bedding. It’s all part of their recycling, reusing and reducing movement. S.O.S PO Box 323 Waterbury, VT 05676 I feel bad for the intern who gets to open the sock mail…but oh well!

I had the opportunity to spend Saturday on snow taking photos and video with the SOS (Snowboard Outreach Society) of Steamboat. SOS is a non-profit organization that relies on volunteers to build character and self-esteem in youth. The best part is they do it through snowboarding, giving the chance for kids to learn how to snowboard and continue to snowboard. The Steamboat SOS handles 28 kids for the snowboarding program. My friend Amy works with the program for Steamboat, she is always talking about it and works really hard for it. She’s tried to get me to volunteer but I can’t commit to doing it since I travel during the winter but I send my leftover gear to Amy to use for the kids each year. I agreed to come out today to get some photos of the kids in different groups and help put together a video for her. I showed up at 9:30am as the kids and instructors were getting ready to start the day. Getting the kids ready and out the door was quite the effort They start the day in a circle to discuss the 5 core values of SOS. Today’s core value was compassion […]

So around this time of year I start to go through my closet and see what’s left that I won’t be using for the year ahead. Then it comes to the choice of what to do with old gear…and it’s tough. Luckily here in Steamboat I have the Snowboard Outreach Society (SOS) and I pack up a box to drop off at my friend Amy’s house since she teaches for them and collects the gear for the upcoming students. This way my gear goes to snowboarding youth that normally can’t afford gear and require donations to be able to ride. Check and see what’s in your area that offers up a way to recycle or pass on used snowboard gear. I have two sets of boots to pass on, my old 686 pants, an old Burton jacket plus multiple beanies, dakine gloves and snowboard socks that I’ll be donating this year. Whether it’s donating to an organization, a thrift store or a friend…pass on your gear so it get used versus being thrown out.
