Location: Mt. Baker, WA and Thompson Pass, Alaska Snow Conditions: Mixture of heavier fresh snow to lighter snow. Setup: I rode the K2 Panoramic with Spark R&D Burner bindings and Vans size 8 women’s boots. Size: 158cm. First Impression: I got this board blindly and it more than did the job for a splitboard setup. Good all-around mountain splitboard. Weight: Average Ease of Use: The Panoramic was easier to set up since I had already set up a Venture splitboard the season before. I had all the things needed (board, voile system, sparks bindings) so it just meant sitting down and setting it up to my stance. The K2 climbing skins that came with the setup weren’t bad but definitely had some days where snow was able to get into the skins and had to be cleared to continue skinning up. Flex: The K2 Panoramic was definitely more forgiving than expected. The all-terrain rocker combo with bambooyah made it a good medium range for flex on the mountain. Longitudinally it had the bambooyah feel to it that was lively and poppy on the board but torsionally it had a softer more forgiving feel. I really liked that when I rode […]

My first taste of the backcountry was years ago when a friend took me out on a borrowed splitboard and backcountry gear to “earn my turns.” It was tough with lots of sweat but it was also a blast and it felt amazing to ride terrain I hadn’t dreamed of. Since then I’ve slowly been acquiring the gear needed to make the full backcountry collection. The first year, I bought the collaspible ski poles, then the next year the shovel and probe and finally got the beacon as a Christmas present (thanks family). The splitboard and bindings were harder to come by so I borrowed them and this year, I am happy to finally round out the collection with my own gear. Of course being in the backcountry requires education and I’m already reaching out to get my hands on the books and the classes so I can be safer in the outdoors this winter. I’m looking forward to skipping the Christmas lines and making my own lines out of the resort, especially the sidecountry at June and exploring some more scenic areas around the area. K2 Panoramic Splitboard What can I say, I’m a fan of bambooyah so definitely […]

Location: Mammoth, CA Snow Conditions: Mixture of slushy snow to leftover soft snow to hardpacked conditions. Setup: I rode the Venture Storm splitboard with Spark R&D Blaze bindings and Vans Veil Boots size 8. Size: 156cm. First Impression: A good trek on the way up, even better on the way down the mountain. Weight: Average Ease of Use: Setting up the splitboard was pretty easy with the Voile mounting system and Spark R&D Blaze bindings. I took everything out, made sure my stance and angles were appropriate, then got everything dialed on the splitboard. To prepare for skinning first, I set up the board as skis, put on the skins (hardest part is peeling them apart) and prepared to ascend the mountain. When I reached the spot I wanted to ride down, I removed the bindings from the skis by removing the slider pins, put the skis on the ground to make the board, connected it and interlocked the board together, then slid the bindings back on and put the pins in. Also removed the skins from the base since you don’t want those on the ride down. Flex: The Storm splitboard is meant to be on the stiffer end […]
