It was a much needed ride day before the family arrives in town for my surgery, so I headed to A-Basin to finally end the season there. It was great timing since today the Lib Tech Denver office peeps were having their end of season shred party on the mountain which is always a good time. Lauren and myself We started out the season together and finished the season together [singlepic id=4846 w=400 h=300 float=] Neon Green looks good on everything [singlepic id=4848 w=400 h=300 float=] Even though there’s a couple weeks left till A-Basin closes, the snow is very soft and slushy. Today was the first day for plenty of pond skims starting to form on the mountain. Adrian taking the park rocker through the pond [singlepic id=4849 w=400 h=300 float=] The guys taking out some of the snowskates [singlepic id=4850 w=400 h=300 float=] The Denver office handles Quiksilver, DC, Lib Tech, GNU, One Ball Jay, Roxy, Bent Metal…jeez any other name I’m forgetting. Today was the party/hang out and just have fun enjoying each other’s company.
My last day at A-Basin has arrived and today was a great day to end out the season. I stayed in Breckenridge last night and scoped up the halfpipe but it’s no longer rideable so that wasn’t an option for today. This morning I met up with the crew (Lauren, Adrian and Xavier) for breakfast in Silverthorne and then headed to the mountain. Sporting the new Neff soft shell with spray paint splatter print [singlepic id=4868 w=300 h=400 float=] We spent the day lapping park and having fun on the runs. There really isn’t much in terms of great snow anymore so it was definitely a jump the rocks kind of day. I spent most of the day ollie’ing whatever I could find and I followed Adrian to a good section of rocks to jump. Xavier threw down his wildcat backflip which I took sequence shots of, here’s the GIF that should make it more animated. Yesterday I convinced Adrian to try my Signal Park Rocker and he’s still riding it. Here’s him on the down-flat-down box. I have a feeling I’m not getting it back.
A-Basin is the last resort standing in Colorado now and quite the popular resort for a mix of snowboarding and hanging on the beach (drinking and BBQ’ing). It’s a 1.5 drive from Steamboat so I made the trek to meet up with Lauren, Adrian and Xavier to ride for the day. The sunshine came out on the mountain with some cloud coverage and A-Basin has held up with their snowfall this season. Hardpacked and icy in the morning, slush in the afternoon. [singlepic id=5075 w=400 h=300 float=] I made the rounds with the occasional shayboarder sticker [singlepic id=5076 w=400 h=300 float=] We made a couple laps and I found I was capable of hitting the mini park…always a plus for me to find rails that don’t scare me. For the whole month of May, A-Basin is putting on Saturday Rail Jams. They are free to enter and are a jam format of skiers and snowboarders hitting two rails. We convinced Lauren and Xavier to enter the rail jam and I headed down the mountain to grab the camera to take photos. [singlepic id=5077 w=400 h=267 float=] Almost time for the jam session to begin [singlepic id=5078 w=400 h=267 […]

Got a good night’s sleep last night and woke up ready for some snowboarding at Blackcomb today. Late season conditions are good at Whistler/Blackcomb but you also tend to sleep in a little later as the conditions soften up so it’s less ice and more fun. I love being in Whistler [singlepic id=5534 w=400 h=268 float=] Photo: Kendra I did a mini video for today’s riding, some fun moments with my canadian friends and snowboarding in bluebird slushy conditions. Blackcomb 4/21/09 from Shayboarder on Vimeo. I love coming to Whistler especially during Telus Festival, so many things to do from the mountain to the base area. I’ve spent plenty of years clubbing that this year I’m more about the riding but there’s always a lot of apres’ after riding. [singlepic id=5535 w=300 h=400 float=] The sun was out for most of today on the mountain, offering up slushy conditions as the day went on. [singlepic id=5536 w=400 h=300 float=] Our riding crew today consisted of Joe, Mike, Kendra and myself. Later on Ben joined us for the last couple runs before apres’ Needless to say, we had a lot of fun without new snow conditions and […]

During the winter, you spend your weekends getting up earlier than you do for work in order to get the fresh powder. As the season winds down, you find yourself sleeping in till the sun warms the snow up. At least for me that’s the case and I’m on the same schedule as my friends. Yesterday getting up at 6am was a freak of nature, so today was a late start to another bluebird day in Steamboat. I did a mini video for today’s riding, my cam doesn’t like the sun so hard to see the snow conditions but it’s nothing to rave about. Steamboat 3/22/09 from Shayboarder on Vimeo. Thumbs up to junk in the trunk I spent today to finish up riding the Capita Midnight, which I’ll be posting the review on shortly. Sorry Johan for stickering it up. If you watch the video, after the music description at the end I included a little locker room talk about the Capita. Our riding crew today consisted of John, Amy, Carrie and myself. I told John as we were heading to the gondola that he was defeating the odds in Steamboat by riding with 3 girls. I […]

Supposedly some snow is on the way and I definitely hope so…but since there hasn’t been new snow, I’ve been lapping the park and pipe. I’m not good at park so this has been an interesting week. Definitely not Champagne powder I tried to video myself riding over a barrel but that didn’t come out, so I really just stayed to my ride break without focusing on trying to take photos of me riding by myself. Doesn’t work that great. The park chair was busy but the pipe was just a couple locals hitting it. It’s becoming a lot more rough to ride, bumpy walls and rutts coming out so if you land in certain spots you can find yourself riding a bump on the vert. So plans are still in the works to head to Winter Park on Saturday to ride and check out the Winter Park Freeskiing Open. Yep going to a ski competition to support a friend who is competing.

It was such a nice day and hard to turn down not going outside to ride. Right now since it’s spring break we have more people in town than usual, so lines are longer. Even on my ride break, I decided to just lap park chair. With no cloud in sight, the weather was warm out. I went out riding in a t-shirt and button up and still was warm when riding. The warm weather is great, but unfortunately it means the season is quickly coming to an end and we’ll see how well the snow holds up when it gets this warm.Since I was riding by myself, just went and lapped the halfpipe and terrain park. It remained pretty busy with people just cruising through, first timers in the park and the regulars continuously lapping it. This is the most common thing I’ve seen this year, people standing at the wrong spot I went back to work, but ended the day to join in friends for Happy Hour at our apres bar, Slopeside. Just sit in the lawn chairs, drink Sunshine and that is a good way to end a day on the slopes and after work.

Since it’s been sunny and slushy on the mountain, my ride breaks have composed of lapping the park and pipe which means staying on lower mountain. Conditions have been kind of grim, dirt is showing through in certain spots and we definitely need snow to get some better coverage. I spent today on the Capita Midnight with rome bindings to try out. Waiting to drop in while the superpipe is getting raked by park crew. This year the crew has stepped it up, Steamboat isn’t known for the parks and they’ve really worked hard to bring new features and listen to local riders on making the park better. Steve from the Sign Shop was out at the park fixing the main entry sign, I caught him straddling the ladder It’s rad when your friends support you, Steve supports shayboarder.com on his board! Right below the pipe is 2 features I’ve been trying to hit, a couple logs and a tire that I can work on nose tapping.

I wasn’t sure if I would make it on the hill but it was a good day to break from work, enjoy the sun and lap the superpipe. Winds were high so the gondola was not running by the time I got up and other chairlifts were closed but luckily the park chair and Christie Peak was all I needed. It’s already March but today I didn’t even wear a jacket snowboarding. I wore a t-shirt and my 686 button up, that was enough even with the winds blasting. Lower mountain is slush, it’s like spring riding at A-Basin right now. I have some readers of the blog in town which is always great to meet people I email back and forth it, in person. Jeremy and Skyler are in steamboat on vacation, stopped by to say hi to me at work and hopefully we can take some laps tomorrow on the mountain. Today I took a ride break just by myself with the Capita Midnight.Just lapping the superpipe was good, cranked the music and rode by myself. I saw a couple people I knew but it was fun to just ride alone. One thing when I ride alone […]

What a difference from when I left Colorado, to Washington riding to back home to Colorado with the change in snow. Luckily for me my Washington trip offered up fresh snowfall when I was there but when I came back to Colorado the sun had been hitting the mountains with a warm spell. I finally made it out on the slopes today with Steve after catching back on work. Trying out the 09-10 Capita Midnight on the slopes Review will come after a couple more days on it! We made our way to Sunshine to just play around, bomb runs and I used the easy terrain to mess with the midnight in how it turns. The snow since I left has really softened up, it’s spring conditions on the mountain right now. Sunny, warm (like hoodie, t-shirt warm) and slushy terrain especially on lower mountain. Steve and I rode through the boardercross course which was moved from the Terrain Park to the area just off the South Peak chairlift. It was our first time checking it out and it was a good spot and good conditions to just cruise through. I caught some video of Steve going through and got […]
