It’s hard to believe that even in April there are Winter Storm Warnings but last night we received another winter storm rolling through Steamboat delivering a powder day on the mountain this morning. During the winter on a powder day you have to get to the gondola early to get in line and start getting the powder turns but today even after 9am there was no one in line and the mountain all to yourself. Late powder dumps definitely a reward for the locals. [singlepic id=8636 w=400 h=300 float=] Since the mountain was empty, it was hard to decide where to ride. Especially when you see the open faces on the mountain, powder filled with 1 or 2 tracks down them. With the high winds, I ducked in the trees to stay warm and enjoy the powder. The trees were good but definitely with only 6 inches in some spots, you could see the crust underneath in areas. [singlepic id=8638 w=400 h=300 float=] I dressed as warm as I could and covered up in April [singlepic id=8640 w=400 h=300 float=] I ended up taking the Arbor Draft with the jib system out on the snow to see how it handled […]

Winter arrived back in Steamboat! Friday I watched it snow most of the day and finally got to get outside to enjoy some of the new snow. I headed up with the girls, Claire and Steph to get our pow turns on. [singlepic id=8564 w=300 h=400 float=] The gals, Claire and Steph stoked for the new snow! [singlepic id=8562 w=400 h=300 float=] Steph getting some powder [singlepic id=8565 w=400 h=300 float=] For the last run met up with Ryan Fantau who was in town to enjoy the powder and caught this photo of him about to follow Powder Pursuits Allen down into the trees. [singlepic id=8563 w=400 h=300 float=] It was definitely good to get out even for the limited time on the mountain. Tomorrow is supposed to be more powder and we have our Rail Rodeo in the afternoon.

Ah resort town living…it means that some nights you close out the bars only to wake up hours later to press glass and get in some epic powder turns. That was today for me and a powder day on the mountain cures everything. [singlepic id=7358 w=400 h=300 float=] I picked up Amy at 8am, got coffee and bagels at the base of the mountain and hit up the gondola line to anxiously await the opening. At the top we waited for Jeremy and his friends to make some laps but we ended up splitting up after one run since we wanted to ride different areas of the mountain. [singlepic id=7361 w=300 h=400 float=] Amy and I headed up Storm Peak, dropped into the back of Morningside and went directly to Wake Up Call which was exactly what we needed. No lines had been dropped and we were the first which can be good and bad on powder days like today. Good that you’ll be making first turns in powder and bad that in the flat areas, you’ll be making tracks and hoping you find someone else’s. [singlepic id=7359 w=400 h=300 float=] Amy found firsthand what happens when you lose speed […]

It feels really good to have a 3 day weekend in town where I can leisurely relax and make my way to the mountain when I want to. I made a couple calls but most people had gone in for the day so I ended up spending the afternoon alone riding the mountain. We received a couple inches last night so today offered up another powder day on the mountain. I headed to the back of the mountain, Morningside area to get my turns in. [singlepic id=7349 w=400 h=300 float=] This year I wanted to try a Burton setup to see how well it would hold up throughout the season (since I’ve only ridden ICS/EST during demo days) and I picked out my powder setup to be entirely Burton with a 158 Burton Malolo and Burton Scribe EST bindings. I finally was able to take it out today and try it in the new snow…so I’ll be updating the review soon with how it handled in powder. [singlepic id=7356 w=400 h=300 float=] Morningside at Steamboat reminds me of Washington but without the pitch, it’s actually really flat which makes it very dangerous on heavy snow years because of the combination […]
