For four years I lived in a beautiful mountain town called Steamboat Springs, Colorado and I still consider it an amazing place to live. The mountain offers up some of the best aspen riding on more mellow terrain, the town has a great relaxed vibe and everyone loves to be in the outdoors. I was really happy to be able to finally return to my former mountain for a day of riding and get to see old friends in a quick visit. I was lucky to ride the record breaking year at Steamboat so I know how good it can be and while they haven’t had as much of a strong season, the storms have started to come in again. It was a great day for groomer laps (mostly due to knowing the trees might not have enough coverage yet) so we ended up charging some of my favorite runs from the past. Since I moved away almost two years ago, the town and mountain has continued with new buildings, businesses and upgrades. It’s rad to be able to return as a tourist and experience the mountain from a new angle. During my time at Steamboat, I had an amazing […]

It’s closing weekend here in Steamboat and while tomorrow might be the last day for snowboarding, today was my last day at Steamboat since i’m going to skip out on tomorrow’s festivities to ride Breckenridge for a demo day. The sky was blue most of the day, warm temps on the mountain and slushy soft snow conditions which meant an ideal day for lapping park with friends. I got my morning coffee, headed to the base and met up with Chris, Mandy, Sonny and Sean to start off the day. Chris’ tailblock in the pipe [singlepic id=8687 w=300 h=400 float=] We started off in the Rabbit Ears Park but since snow was so slow, we headed into Bashor/Maverick’s Terrain Park so we could use the chairlift there without having to deal with slow cat tracks. Plus the Rabbit Ears park was dying a fast death in the box line (it’s that tilted as it looks). [singlepic id=8686 w=400 h=300 float=] Craig’s nose grab in Rabbit Ears Terrain Park [singlepic id=8690 w=400 h=300 float=] I took a couple laps through the pipe and then got some video and photos of everyone hitting the jump line in Maverick’s. Here’s the video of […]

Today was the last ride break of the season, ride breaks are the reason I can get up on the mountain even though I work a full time Monday to Friday normal job. It means instead of lunch, I can shred and I’ll definitely miss having that luxury out of the office each day. I hit up Jenny Brown to catch her on her ride break so could we hit up the mountain and get our lunch fix on the ride up. Here’s Hannah and Jenny Brown from Powdertools enjoying our lunch, hot dogs on the chairlift. [singlepic id=8680 w=300 h=400 float=] The shredding is back to soft slush with bluebird skies and no complaints on it at all except for waxing my board alot more often. With my limited time to ride, we headed to Christie Peak to lap park and pipe.
It’s hard to believe that in just a matter of days the mountain will close, my ride breaks will become lunch breaks and the snow will start to melt quickly bringing out colors other than white. I’m sad that the season is ending but also ready for Steamboat to close which lets me move on. I ended up taking today to get out on the mountain, get in a couple laps and ride by myself through the park. It was your typical slow day for laps, bluebird skies on the mountain, not so many people and no one to ride with other than your thoughts. [singlepic id=8678 w=400 h=300 float=] Yesterday during my visit to Copper, it was fun to venture into their terrain park where I started out this season and see how a box that was scary then…isn’t scary now. I love progression, being able to feel it and be stoked on it. [singlepic id=8679 w=400 h=300 float=] Back to the daily grind of life and stoked for the next adventure.

It’s hard to believe that even in April there are Winter Storm Warnings but last night we received another winter storm rolling through Steamboat delivering a powder day on the mountain this morning. During the winter on a powder day you have to get to the gondola early to get in line and start getting the powder turns but today even after 9am there was no one in line and the mountain all to yourself. Late powder dumps definitely a reward for the locals. [singlepic id=8636 w=400 h=300 float=] Since the mountain was empty, it was hard to decide where to ride. Especially when you see the open faces on the mountain, powder filled with 1 or 2 tracks down them. With the high winds, I ducked in the trees to stay warm and enjoy the powder. The trees were good but definitely with only 6 inches in some spots, you could see the crust underneath in areas. [singlepic id=8638 w=400 h=300 float=] I dressed as warm as I could and covered up in April [singlepic id=8640 w=400 h=300 float=] I ended up taking the Arbor Draft with the jib system out on the snow to see how it handled […]

Just a week left till Steamboat closes which means enjoying the mountain as much as possible while it’s open. This weekend was my last weekend that I plan to in Steamboat for April so it was good to take it easy, get to the mountain when I felt like waking up and just enjoy the runs. Today took a while to actually hit the slopes since I ended up leaving my boots at home so ended up going home to grab them and coming back to the mountain. The lower mountain feels empty without the small park, it’s all groomed and the features are gone so all that’s left for park riding is Rabbit Ears and Maverick’s (medium and large features). I headed up to Rabbit Ears to meet up with Chris and his student John for a couple laps. [singlepic id=8592 w=400 h=300 float=] Today was my first day on the new 10-11 Arbor Draft which I was able to try on the boxes, log features and halfpipe. I’ll spend time later this week freeriding with it.
I came in late last night from dinner at the Carrigan house and ended up crashing hard till this morning. During my hours of sleep, it snowed in town and delivered a couple new inches on the mountain that just got better as the snow kept falling during the day. I’ve been rocking the C2 technology on powder days which even riding a 155 Roxy Eminence in the powder it holds up and stays up. My camera was acting up today so I left it in my pocket for the majority of riding. [singlepic id=8567 w=300 h=400 float=] I did a late shred day, took my time getting up and finally headed to the mountain. It was a perfect morning for laps in the trees and luckily I ran into Becca, Rose and Jordan on the Pony Chairlift for a good shred sesh with the girls. Becca getting deep in the trees [singlepic id=8566 w=400 h=300 float=] We ended up heading down for the Rail Rodeo competition that started at 3pm near the base area. I’ll have a separate post for that with photos. Good day and can’t wait for tomorrow on the mountain.

I’ve decided that I’m going to ride every day until Steamboat closes on April 11th because I have no reason not to and because there’s 12 days left in the season. Usually I might skip a day or two during the week to get errands done in town but I’m dedicated to stomping some end of season tricks. This is definitely a year for my park progression which makes me happy that I’ve been pushing myself in an area where I easily could have ignored it and kept freeriding. [singlepic id=8524 w=400 h=300 float=] The morning was really hardpacked, crusty snow but by 10am it was softening up very quickly and turned to slush by 11am. It made the park riding fun but a lot slower to get onto features. I was able to take laps with Sonny, Molly and Tony for most of the day since they weren’t teaching.
It’s becoming clearer each day that the season is coming to an end in Steamboat, there’s more brown than white on the mountain and April is just days away. The mountain is set to close April 11th, after that I’ll be heading down to Summit County to ride the longer season at A-Basin. [singlepic id=8518 w=400 h=300 float=] Normally the end of the season it starts to mellow down in town but this year I’ve noticed there’s still a good amount of visitors in Steamboat getting in some late season riding. During midweek since I’m on the mountain for only an hour ride break, I spend it in the terrain park lapping my favorite features and still working on my progression. Today I had help with my progression on the dance box learning to 270 spin to win (that’s what I call it)…but I’ll have to conquer it another day.
