It’s closing weekend here in Steamboat and while tomorrow might be the last day for snowboarding, today was my last day at Steamboat since i’m going to skip out on tomorrow’s festivities to ride Breckenridge for a demo day. The sky was blue most of the day, warm temps on the mountain and slushy soft snow conditions which meant an ideal day for lapping park with friends. I got my morning coffee, headed to the base and met up with Chris, Mandy, Sonny and Sean to start off the day. Chris’ tailblock in the pipe [singlepic id=8687 w=300 h=400 float=] We started off in the Rabbit Ears Park but since snow was so slow, we headed into Bashor/Maverick’s Terrain Park so we could use the chairlift there without having to deal with slow cat tracks. Plus the Rabbit Ears park was dying a fast death in the box line (it’s that tilted as it looks). [singlepic id=8686 w=400 h=300 float=] Craig’s nose grab in Rabbit Ears Terrain Park [singlepic id=8690 w=400 h=300 float=] I took a couple laps through the pipe and then got some video and photos of everyone hitting the jump line in Maverick’s. Here’s the video of […]

This has been one interesting season for conditions on the mountain, there’s no guarantee to what the weather or snow will be like until you get up on the slopes. Today was a really slow snow day on lower mountain, almost warm but not fully bluebird out and really hard to judge speed in spots, too much or too little. I still can’t believe it’s already day 90 of the season, it’s insane how quickly it passes. [singlepic id=8621 w=400 h=300 float=] I met up with a bunch of the instructor guys to lap Rabbit Ears and Maverick’s for my ride break. The guys worked on the jump line getting some filming in and I worked on the rail line, then headed over to the superpipe to try that out. [singlepic id=8622 w=400 h=300 float=] The nice thing about late season is park laps are almost empty except for running into friends and other locals. It’s just nice and quiet on the mountain especially on gondola closure days. [singlepic id=8623 w=400 h=300 float=] I found the pipe pretty fun today, took a couple laps through and even though the rest of the snow in Rabbit Ears was slow the pipe […]

The mountain conditions are taking a hard hit from the lack of snow this year, there’s more brown than white on lower mountain and you definitely get the feel that the season is winding down quick for Steamboat. Today the winds were roaring in Steamboat which meant chair and gondola closures, I stayed low on the mountain where the winds weren’t too bad. I rode up the chairlift and the first thing you noticed was what normally is a super busy mini park was empty which meant it was closed and is probably done for the season. [singlepic id=8545 w=400 h=300 float=] Luckily the medium and large parks are being kept up enough to last through to closing day. Park Crew was hard at work salting the approaches and landings for the features so even though it’s slushy out…they stay intact as long as possible. [singlepic id=8541 w=400 h=300 float=] I met up with Chris from snowboarderguide.com who lives in town and even though he’s been riding with a student for the week, I was able to take a couple laps with them. They hit the jump line while I hit the rail line in Rabbit Ears Park. Chris even […]

Bryan Iguchi’s blog started off with “Good riding is a state of mind, not dependent on snow quality, terrain or keeping up with the latest tricks. It’s all about the people and vibe that make the session” for his March 25th update and it really rang true for today’s riding as well as many other days this season. The snow today was the worst I’ve seen for lower mountain, we received new snow but the mix of slushy/frozen ice to heavy packed snow meant sluggish, bumpy, blah snow but I could have cared less cause I was riding park with friends. Everyone watching each other’s runs [singlepic id=8428 w=400 h=300 float=] The lacking snow and conditions have made the park need more upkeep so some features came completely out like my favorite flat box. Ah well I still have the flat down box and up rail to conquer. [singlepic id=8429 w=400 h=300 float=] My first run I completely ate it upon landing the flat down box, totally ate it and my goggles came off and filled in with snow. It sucked and no matter how much I tried, they were blurry from then on so I grabbed goggles quickly during […]

I’ve lived in Steamboat for almost four years now and experienced quite a variety of snow years, from the record year of 07-08 where I lost track of the best powder days because there were so many to this year where we are 100 inches below average with very few powder days to count. For me the end result has been it’s been a great year for park and during midweek days I just lap park on my ride break. Today was another of those days, lapped park, ran into acquaintances and enjoyed the slushy warm day outside. It was the first time this season I left the jacket inside and layered up with long sleeves. [singlepic id=8426 w=300 h=400 float=] The mountain is really feeling the effects of the sunshine and while I love it, definitely some brown to the mountain that’s coming out. Looks like mud season will arrive early this year as the snow melts quicker in town and especially on the mountain. [singlepic id=8425 w=400 h=300 float=] So yesterday I took out the new Arbor Cadence for the first day and I noticed something was off, like definitely off while riding. I couldn’t pinpoint it, I […]

The snow has been falling in Steamboat finally! We’ve received some new snow to help with the lack of snow this season but today with my limited ride time I just headed to the park and convinced Chris to join in. We haven’t been able to ride together in such a long time that I just wanted to ride with him, get feedback and lap park which for some reason is all I’ve been interested in lately. I’ve progressed to the medium terrain park at Steamboat and getting comfortable on the rails and boxes. I need to start stepping up my game but I’m also enjoying progressing slowly too. Chris got a shot of me today on the flat down box that I’ve been working on, now each time I can ride it to the end so I’m stoked! [singlepic id=8204 w=300 h=400 float=] We took a lap through the pipe which was the mistake of the day, it was powder and sheet ice underneath plus it wasn’t groomed so super sketchy with the flat light conditions. Chris’ brother Tracy still rallied it through it despite the conditions [singlepic id=8203 w=300 h=400 float=] So my butt is bruised and hurts […]

It’s been a tough winter to wake up early where there is no new snowfall on the mountain but that also means weekends are spent getting stuff done before I head up for the day. Today I had time to wax and scrape my boards which was much needed with the slushy slow snow on the mountain. I made it to the mountain just in time to run into a couple friends for laps. [singlepic id=8140 w=400 h=300 float=] I was a couple gondola cars behind Jenny and Amanda and behind me a couple cars was Allen. We all met up at the top just in time for Allen to prove his good lookingness next to this guy. Tough choice. [singlepic id=8141 w=400 h=300 float=] After a lap on upper mountain in bumpy snow, we decided that it was time to rally to the pipe and park for the afternoon. It was a bummer to see the mini park closed for the day but meant that I had to get the tricks in medium park because that’s all there was.
It’s hard to imagine that winter is almost over, March has arrived which is my favorite month of winter but also means there are less days on the slopes soon. I’ve had an amazing winter so far and today everything felt good, cranked the music, lapped the mountain in the early morning and then was able to lap park with Claire. Snowboarding is addicting, cause I was wanting more this afternoon. This morning I was able to ride from 9-11 to do the Steamboat straight talk, it’s basically the conditions of the day blog post for the mountain and a lot of fun plus it gets me out on the slopes. The sun was out, temps were warmer and I was testing out the new Chemical Storm snowboard. [singlepic id=8087 w=300 h=400 float=] The fun part about testing or even reviewing is just being able to get used to a board, ride it and see how it handles in as much different conditions as I possibly can. Today’s conditions were corduroy groomers, bumpy choppy snow, leftover pow, park and pipe. After a typical run, it’s time to see how it handles easy turns, harder aggressive turns, quick stops, short and […]

[singlepic id=8020 w=400 h=300 float=] When I headed out onto the snow it was a little overcast and warm on the mountain so I didn’t layer it up and dressed for a warm park day. That meant that it would soon snow which it did after an hour into riding, the flakes started falling at times throughout the afternoon. I was in the zone, trying my hardest to get boardslides on the boxes so I kept riding through the new snow but since I was riding alone I wasn’t really pushing myself.
