It’s that time of year! When the mountains are calling, the snow is falling, and all it takes is a 2 hour flight to head to Steamboat Springs, Colorado.Years ago, I used to live in Steamboat and now I’m happy that I can make the annual trek back to the town and mountain. I still have my favorite trails, powder stashes, lifts, and spots around town that I enjoy visiting. We packed up our gear on Sunday morning, headed to SeaTac and hopped the direct flight from Seattle to Hayden/Steamboat Springs on Alaska Airlines. I even packed my adventure socks – because I was ready for adventure! It’s been hit or miss with winter conditions around the Western US. So far Steamboat Ski Resort had only received 142″ of snowfall but they’ve done an amazing job in getting the mountain 100% open and in good condition for skiing and snowboarding. While it looked like a storm would arrive during our stay, most of the morning reports were 1-2″ of snowfall – just enough to freshen up the mountain with a nice coat of white. I used my MAX pass to take care of my time on the slopes. No matter […]

Years ago, I used to live in a quaint mountain town called Steamboat Springs, Colorado where I’d spend every day riding the local mountain. Even though it’s been over 10 years since I called Steamboat home, it’s one of my favorite places to visit because it holds a special spot near and dear to my heart. There’s still the favorite stashes, the local watering holes, and the amazing people who make up the community around the mountain. I’m lucky to return to my old stomping grounds at least once a year. Thanks to the direct flight from Seattle to Hayden, it was a 2 hour flight and 45 minute drive before we were slopeside at Steamboat Resort. We even enjoy a First Class upgrade on the way out. We arrived in the evening but that meant we’d be fully charged to hit the slopes the next day. It’s been a good year for Steamboat with the town receiving over 230″ of snowfall so far. It looked like we might be lucky with our trip and a storm rolling through but it shifted course on our last day in town. Even while there was no new snow, we did manage to […]

When I found out I’d be making the trip back to Steamboat, I knew I was in NEED of a powder day. I needed a guaranteed good powder day on my snowboard so I immediately looked up Steamboat Powdercats to see if there was any availability in the cat tour groups while I was in town.Luckily for me, there was room in the cats. I booked the intermediate level II group (because quite frankly I just wanted the trees and powder without the “we gotta rip this mentality.” Leading up to the trip, I was pretty sick. In fact I almost canceled but I was so looking forward to this day that I needed to go. I would suck it up, pull through and ride hard. There’s always time to feel sick later right? I’m really glad I didn’t cancel and pulled through a tough girl mentality because the day ended up being exactly what I needed. Powder turn after powder turn after powder day. The morning of the trip I checked in at the Steamboat powdercats office, signed a couple waivers, got my gear checked out (just in case borrowed a Never Summer demo board in case my wax […]

For four years I lived in a beautiful mountain town called Steamboat Springs, Colorado and I still consider it an amazing place to live. The mountain offers up some of the best aspen riding on more mellow terrain, the town has a great relaxed vibe and everyone loves to be in the outdoors. I was really happy to be able to finally return to my former mountain for a day of riding and get to see old friends in a quick visit. I was lucky to ride the record breaking year at Steamboat so I know how good it can be and while they haven’t had as much of a strong season, the storms have started to come in again. It was a great day for groomer laps (mostly due to knowing the trees might not have enough coverage yet) so we ended up charging some of my favorite runs from the past. Since I moved away almost two years ago, the town and mountain has continued with new buildings, businesses and upgrades. It’s rad to be able to return as a tourist and experience the mountain from a new angle. During my time at Steamboat, I had an amazing […]

Since I moved to Steamboat 4 years ago, I’ve lived in the same house with my dog that overlooks the Yampa Valley. Roommates have come and gone, friends have joined along for the ride but I knew eventually it would could to an end. Steamboat has been paradise in many ways; powder days were a plenty in the epic snowfall years, gondola rides were a 5 minute walk away and friends who lived for snow just as much as I did. It’s sad to leave paradise but I’m also ready to leave for new opportunities and new places. [singlepic id=9075 w=200 h=400 float=] With any job comes ups and downs but I left a great crew of co-workers at Steamboat who wished me luck and were excited for what lies ahead for me. It was the best going away day I’ve had in any job and I’m so glad I spent 4 years with the company. As I left Steamboat yesterday with my truck packed full of all my belongings, I was more focused on the one thing I was leaving behind which is my dog Capita. She’s saying in Steamboat for the summer where she’ll have so much attention […]

It’s closing weekend here in Steamboat and while tomorrow might be the last day for snowboarding, today was my last day at Steamboat since i’m going to skip out on tomorrow’s festivities to ride Breckenridge for a demo day. The sky was blue most of the day, warm temps on the mountain and slushy soft snow conditions which meant an ideal day for lapping park with friends. I got my morning coffee, headed to the base and met up with Chris, Mandy, Sonny and Sean to start off the day. Chris’ tailblock in the pipe [singlepic id=8687 w=300 h=400 float=] We started off in the Rabbit Ears Park but since snow was so slow, we headed into Bashor/Maverick’s Terrain Park so we could use the chairlift there without having to deal with slow cat tracks. Plus the Rabbit Ears park was dying a fast death in the box line (it’s that tilted as it looks).
Today was the last ride break of the season, ride breaks are the reason I can get up on the mountain even though I work a full time Monday to Friday normal job. It means instead of lunch, I can shred and I’ll definitely miss having that luxury out of the office each day. I hit up Jenny Brown to catch her on her ride break so could we hit up the mountain and get our lunch fix on the ride up. Here’s Hannah and Jenny Brown from Powdertools enjoying our lunch, hot dogs on the chairlift. [singlepic id=8680 w=300 h=400 float=] The shredding is back to soft slush with bluebird skies and no complaints on it at all except for waxing my board alot more often. With my limited time to ride, we headed to Christie Peak to lap park and pipe.
It’s hard to believe that in just a matter of days the mountain will close, my ride breaks will become lunch breaks and the snow will start to melt quickly bringing out colors other than white. I’m sad that the season is ending but also ready for Steamboat to close which lets me move on. I ended up taking today to get out on the mountain, get in a couple laps and ride by myself through the park. It was your typical slow day for laps, bluebird skies on the mountain, not so many people and no one to ride with other than your thoughts. [singlepic id=8678 w=400 h=300 float=] Yesterday during my visit to Copper, it was fun to venture into their terrain park where I started out this season and see how a box that was scary then…isn’t scary now. I love progression, being able to feel it and be stoked on it.
It’s hard to believe that even in April there are Winter Storm Warnings but last night we received another winter storm rolling through Steamboat delivering a powder day on the mountain this morning. During the winter on a powder day you have to get to the gondola early to get in line and start getting the powder turns but today even after 9am there was no one in line and the mountain all to yourself. Late powder dumps definitely a reward for the locals. [singlepic id=8636 w=400 h=300 float=] Since the mountain was empty, it was hard to decide where to ride. Especially when you see the open faces on the mountain, powder filled with 1 or 2 tracks down them. With the high winds, I ducked in the trees to stay warm and enjoy the powder. The trees were good but definitely with only 6 inches in some spots, you could see the crust underneath in areas. [singlepic id=8638 w=400 h=300 float=] I dressed as warm as I could and covered up in April [singlepic id=8640 w=400 h=300 float=] I ended up taking the Arbor Draft with the jib system out on the snow to see how it handled […]

[singlepic id=8621 w=400 h=300 float=] I met up with a bunch of the instructor guys to lap Rabbit Ears and Maverick’s for my ride break. The guys worked on the jump line getting some filming in and I worked on the rail line, then headed over to the superpipe to try that out.
