Location: Mammoth, CA Snow Conditions: Hardpacked to softpacked to ice chunks to slushfests. Setup: I rode the Stepchild Simon Chamberlain with Union Team bindings and Vans Veil Boots size 8. Size: 152cm. First Impression: The Simon Chamberlain steps it up with changes and it’s a damn fine ride. Weight: Average Flex: Softer flex torsionally between the bindings with a stiffer nose and tail flex. Overall good stability longitudinally on the Chamberlain. The flex made the board quick and responsive edge to edge with good snap and pop. Stability wise, the board handled chop and crud better than expected. The Simon Chamberlain is rocker/reverse camber with 6mm of rocker, just enough for freestyle fun but still continues to be a very consistent ride turning down the mountain. Turning: Quick and responsive was the Chamberlain. It was easy to ride and the softer flex between the bindings definitely helped the torsional forgiveness of the board. I really liked the shorter quick turns but it still did good on the longer S turns. Supposedly the Stepchild rocker is “pre-flexed” going into turns and for me, it made turns super comfortable and natural. Stable: I had just rode the Eco Pop that morning and […]

Snowboarding was meant to be enjoyed and it’s no surprise that Stepchild follows through with enjoying snowboarding, good quality snowboards and keeping it real. Stepchild added a couple new boards to the line which includes more reverse camber models in a variety of low to high price ranges. Joe Sexton received a pro model and guest pro Scotty Wittlake received a board in the line up for 10-11. The women’s PMS board will surely cause women to gasp and men to faint at the sight of a red filled river and tampon riding stepchild.
Location: Winter Park, CO Snow Conditions: Hardpacked to icy conditions on the mountain, flat-light riding conditions. Setup: I rode the Stepchild Salary Man with Ride Bandita Contraband bindings and Vans Veil Boots size 8. Size: 155cm. First Impression: This board is the sucks model (powder sucks, everything sucks) and while some stuff might suck…this board makes the mountain not suck when you ride it. Weight: average Flex: The stepchild sucks was middle of the road for the flex, it wasn’t stiff but it wasn’t soft. It could handle the playful fun riding on the mountain but also charge freeriding. It was a very ideal middle of the road for an all mountain board and I could still play with it on butters and presses. The flex was consistent throughout the board, never felt like the tail or nose was stiffer than the other and underfoot a tad stiffer to absorb rougher landings. Overall it was a fairly forgiving ride on the mountain with no surprises in how it handled. Turning: It was a very predictable ride down the mountain, easy to transition into turns and you felt the board hold the carve each turn whether it was short or long […]

Location: Whistler, BC Snow Conditions: Bluebird with hardpacked icy conditions to softer groomers. Setup: I rode the Stepchild Chi Borg with Union Trilogy’s and my Rome Vamps size 8. First Impression: I shouldn’t have waited to ride a stepchild for this long…not bad, not bad at all. Size: 158cm Weight: average Flex: Consistent flex throughout the board that was a pretty easy mellow flex pattern. It wasn’t a noodle nor was it stiff, just a very good mid-flex that could ride any part of the mountain. Pressing or doing butters on the nose and tail was easy to flex and hold without catching an edge. Torsional flex had some give to it, if I need a quick response from it it was capable of quick turns, stops and sprays. Turning: This is where it surprised me and by my expectations, I wasn’t expecting it to hold S turns very well but it was a really smooth stable ride on the long radius turns. It was easy to initiate into turns and on edge, it held a turn from start to finish. So far when I’ve ridden the reverse cambers with 6mm of rocker, it’s enough to have freestyle fun but […]

Since the Grenade Games Superpipe Finals didn’t start till noon, I hit up the mountain to get to the on-snow demos going on at Whistler Mountain for the morning. Here’s my write up on the Grenade Games Superpipe Finals [singlepic id=5494 w=400 h=300 float=] The perk of being on the mountain early was I got to enjoy the Peak to Peak gondola alone, which was interesting having to entertain myself. Some of that downtime made it in my Superpipe video at the very end. Whistler Mountain has the on-snow demos going on for the next 3 days. I love demo days and especially when it means I can try other companies. On snow today was Salomon, Technine, Ride, Burton, Stepchild and Capita/Union. Hopefully there will be more tomorrow, but if not I have some boards on my list to try out. [singlepic id=5495 w=400 h=300 float=] Today I tried the Stepchild Chi Borg, their new reverse camber and a good ride everywhere reverse camber. I spent the morning riding that making laps by myself and then headed back to Blackcomb Mountain to watch the Grenade Games Superpipe Finals.
From the catalog to the names of the snowboards, it’s very clear that Stepchild is all about snowboarding and not taking things too seriously. Seven years of being in business, Stepchild is still a small independent snowboard company that has been admired for doing what they do. While catalogs may be full of bullshit, reading Stepchild’s catalog you may laugh, you may cry but you feel like you are being told honest feelings from a company. The best part is that green to them is just a color. Stepchild’s Chi Borg will feature rocker but it varies by size. The 148cm will feature 4mm of rocker, the 153cm will feature 6mm of rocker and the 156cm will feature 8mm of rocker. I still have yet to try a Stepchild, it’s definitely a brand I want to try especially some of the boards they put out so hopefully this year I can get on one.
