When the Stevens Pass Bike Park opened late last summer, I was living out of state but still stoked to hear my home mountain opened lift accessed downhill trails. Since moving back to Washington earlier this winter, I’ve been anxiously awaiting for the snow to melt since Stevens closed for winter operations and today was finally the day for the Bike Park to open! Props to the hardworking Stevens team and crew to get it up and running despite the abundance of snow this season. It was an easy drive up Hwy 2 to get in some lift accessed riding this morning. Once I hit the unloaded my bike and got my ticket, I followed the clearly marked signs to get to the lift. Riding a new Bike Park is a good thing, it definitely pushes your riding to ride different dirt, trails and timing. I knew there were two trails open so I figured I would stick to the blue Rock Crusher (more difficult) trail for the day to get used to the design of the Bike Park here. I usually never push my luck on the first day of wherever I’m riding because I’d rather have my first […]

It’s been a stormy week for the Northwest. Lots of rain in town and snow in the mountains. Stevens Pass has been getting snowfall that kept delivering powder days on the mountain. I waited for Erik to start the day on the slopes we could carpool up together. Even by the time we arrived in the early afternoon, there was still powder in spots and turns to be made. The best part about Friday snowboarding was the sun came out! I’m still getting used to the Northwest weather and definitely miss those bluebird sunny days after a powder storm. But today it was almost bluebird as the temps warmed up in the afternoon. The snow was a bit heavier than a couple days ago and required some effort to not get stuck or wipeout. I know, cause I took a good fall when I ended up leaving the snow track in a flat spot. It’s finally the weekend which means busier slopes and a chance for me to escape to the Washington coast for a couple days. Looking forward to hanging out on the sand and being out of the snow.

It was great to arrive back in Washington to fresh snow falling from the sky. The Northwest has certainly been the place for snowfall this year and it’s still coming down! I took yesterday off for a much needed down day and hoped that today would still deliver the snowfall. It did, the snow was still great on the mountain and offered up powder turns throughout most of the day. I got picked up by Jason, we met at the AAI avalanche level I course two weeks ago and talked about shredding Stevens when I got back from BC. We headed up and met up with a couple of his friends in the parking lot and ended up shredding with them most of the day. We headed for the backside of the mountain to get in our kicks. Today was a good exploration day, riding with other people and getting in some time lapping new terrain this season. Sometimes new terrain leads to powder! The riding was good, the powder was deep in spots and there was still plenty of snow falling from the sky. We ended up getting in some really good laps together. At the demos I was […]

If you’re wondering what mountain has been getting hammered this season, I can tell you Stevens Pass has been getting the goods. The snowbanks are high, the coverage is amazing and today was another powder day. Despite the backside not being open (due to avy danger), the front of the mountain and especially the trees offered up some really fun riding for the day. I was pretty stoked to get out on the mountain with my new Burton AK Cyclic jacket. I’ve needed something Gore Tex for shredding Washington and finally got this jacket to handle the conditions here. Plus the best choice of today was wearing a helmet on the mountain. I got picked up by my buddy Erik and his friend KT. Once at Stevens, my buddy Dennis joined us for some shred laps and shared the good spots. The word from Stevens was 7 inches of new snow in the past 24 hours. We hit up Seventh Heaven to see how the snow would be at 11am and found some decent powder spots. Then it was off to Tye lift to see what was open there. We knew the backside wasn’t open but hoped we could hike […]

Yesterday was a hard day for the northwest. Avalanches took three lives in the backcountry at Stevens Pass and one life at Alpental. As the events would unfold yesterday, texts came in that said it was Chris Rudolph in the avalanche. I’ve known Chris from Stevens, the industry and he was an amazing guy to be around. The reason I came back to Stevens Pass was because of him, he told me I was always welcome back and that this was my home. I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for him. I didn’t think I would ride today but my friend Erik told me he was going to ride so I joined him. I didn’t want to have to drive by Tunnel Creek and think of the lives lost but Chris would never have wanted anyone to stop doing what they love. So today I rode for Chris. The mountain was business as usual, it was a holiday so the parking lot was full but the mountain spread them out well. At the bar later on in the day, shots were drank and you could see the impact a bit more on the people behind the mountain. Cruising through […]

I forgot how much I missed snowbanks until I drove up to Stevens Pass, parked the truck and realized that the looming height of them was back in my life. The northwest has gotten most of the storms in the US, riding powder while the rest of us were riding parks and groomers. So far Stevens Pass, Washington has an 84″ snow base at the bottom and 102″ at the top. The flakes were starting to really come down on the walk to the lodge. It was a quiet Thursday on the mountain, there were more cars in the lot than I expected but for some reason the mountain seemed empty. I guess everyone found their own spots to ride all day. It felt good to be home but also an awakening that I am back in the northwest where it’s tougher riding with wetter snow. Northwest breeds good riders; the variety of conditions, the heavy snow and the fact that some days you’ll get soaked…it’s not for everyone but it’s fun. Today I went up to the mountain to get reacquainted with my old stomping grounds. Since there was new snow on the ground, I skipped the park and […]

My visit to the northwest timed perfectly with a sunday funday at Stevens Pass to help close out their 09-10 season. I woke up bright and early to meet up with my friends Anj and Niko in Seattle at 7:30am with just enough time to get coffee for the drive. The skies remained blue all day and warm weather greeted us once we arrived on the mountain. The Closing Day festivities combined with sunny skies brought up a good amount of people for the day. I was stoked because I would get to see a bunch of people and make turns with them today. [singlepic id=8760 w=400 h=300 float=] Unfortunately the big pond skimming event was cancelled this year. As they were filling up the water, they noticed a hole in the plastic lining. I guess someone had some fun last night and ended up ripping a hole in the pond. Such a bummer but you know what, it was still a fun day snowboarding without the pond skimming. [singlepic id=8758 w=400 h=300 float=] You know when you see women lined up at the pool flipping over for their tan lines, I’ve never seen the men do it until today […]

Every time I visit Seattle, a trip to Stevens Pass is always in the cards to get in some much needed snowboarding time. It’s my old stomping grounds & place of employment before I moved to Colorado so it always holds a place close to my heart. I woke up this morning in Seattle and made the 1.5 hour drive to the mountains just in time for a late morning shredfest. Erik was supposed to be my riding buddy but unfortunately he couldn’t make it so it was just Dennis, Lee and myself for laps. [singlepic id=7837 w=400 h=300 float=] I’ve known Dennis from my snowboard.com days, he’s been my roommate and friend for years so it’s always fun to hit up the mountain where he works and get some shred time in together. Dennis also hooked me up so I could ride for the day, thank you Dennis! [singlepic id=7839 w=400 h=300 float=] The northwest started out on with great snowfall that allowed for an early opening but it hasn’t been a typical “tons of snow” season there which was clear on the drive up where it was a bit too green and not enough white on the sides […]
