Today was a good day. The day that everything starts to come back that you forgot, the day that you have a good crew to ride with and the day that snowboarding is fun. My snowboard legs started to come back, making today a lot more comfortable on the boxes and back on the board. We ended up having our group of girls lapping the park today. It was Michelle, Angela, myself, Caitlin and Taylor lapping the box section of Windells Park in the sun. With the rope tow right there, you could lap over and over to your hearts content. Switched up the boards with the Ride Kink to take out on the snow today thanks to the Windells demo center. Pretty fun board for the conditions on the mountain and park laps. I’ll make sure to post a review soon on it. I was able to play around with the Zeal Z3 testing out the GPS and tracking on them when I took longer runs today. I’ll play around with them more tomorrow to get the full testing done. After lapping park and hitting boxes, I was ready to call it a day and head down the mountain […]

After spending the last couple weeks mountain biking, I finally planned a trip to visit Mt Hood for some much needed shred time. For those seeking summer snowboarding in the US, Timberline Lodge has it and there are two popular summer camps that offer fun private parks for your enjoyment. The northwest had a good winter which means an awesome summer for park building on the glacier. Arriving back at Mt Hood in the summer is always magnificent. The mountain fills up with tourists, races, park rats and everyone who just wants to enjoy the snow longer. I was really stoked to see the snow conditions for mid-July and see that you could still ride to the bottom. The weather held up throughout most of the day, there were some clouds that came through but it remained rideable all day long. Located right next to each other, HCSC and Windells battle it out for snowboard camps in the summer. I was really excited to be able to ride both camps today so I spent the morning lapping HCSC with Steph and the afternoon at Windells getting some photos and lapping the easier features. Both camps have rope tows so you […]

There’s a list in my head of things I want to do when it comes to snowboarding. It’s not really a bucket list but more a list that every snowboarder dreams of. One of the items was to do a summer at Mt Hood and I can finally cross it off the list. There was a chance that this summer might not have happened, I interviewed at two rad companies right before Mt Hood and I made the decision that I would stick to my commitment of riding this summer. Looking back on the summer, I have no regrets and I walked away with friendships, fun and my longest season of snowboarding ever. I arrived at Mt Hood in late May which meant seeing the full summer snow conditions at Timberline each day. In early June, Timberline was covered with tons of snow. It was like winter at any other mountain and it meant that this summer would be great for snow conditions through September. In mid-June we received a powder day and it was the first time riding powder in the summer months (so worth it!). Eventually as the summer wore on, the snow melted into the familiar areas […]

I won’t call this the last day of the season yet because I know that come September a day trip down to Timberline would be worth it but it’s the last day for me as of right now. My knees feel sore but my heart is still wanting more of the mountain. The park has been a blast with the two halfpipes and being able to lap Palmer chairlift until the lifts close at 1:30pm. Since the camps have ended I’ve met some great people on the mountain and become more familiar with faces I’ve seen all summer. It’s down to the last bunch of riders sticking it out before moving on. Today we made laps with the Caked Snowboard crew who have been here all summer living the dream with my friends Julie and Geoff. [singlepic id=9892 w=600 h=450 float=] Matt in the minipipe [singlepic id=9893 w=600 h=450 float=] For snowboarders there are two fun laps at Timberline right now. You have option A which is to jib the rocks, hit the kickers along the run and spin/press/butter your heart out down the mountain or option B which is the mogul line, once the racers leave and the snow […]

[singlepic id=9887 w=300 h=533 float=] Every morning at Timberline begins in the parking lot where you see familiar faces, listen to music and get your gear ready for the day. This morning I recognized a familiar face but couldn’t place how I knew him. Eventually on the mountain I said hello and realized it was Matt from Leavenworth. I had met him and his girl Victoria a couple years ago through the blog so it was rad piecing that together. We ended up making laps for the day and caught some photos of him. [singlepic id=9888 w=600 h=338 float=] Snow conditions at Timberline are still holding up great especially for park laps on Palmer chairlift. The mini pipe and halfpipe were so much fun just cruising through. [singlepic id=9883 w=400 h=533 float=] The mountain is very very quiet except for those who live here or those who are still sticking around enjoying it. I’m the latter, just enjoying it but definitely ready to enjoy a fall break from snowboarding soon. I’ve got friends Julie, Geoff and Erin in town so we headed up to the mountain in the late morning. Public park is up and with a ton of features since they took over the HCSC park including the mini pipe and halfpipe plus jumps plus rails/boxes.
The last couple days have been a whirlwind of fun here at Mt Hood, Oregon. My time at Windells Camp came to an end which meant celebrating with the staff party, then packing everything up to move out of the ark. I ended up not going far since I’ll be staying in Govy the next couple days to enjoy some quiet shred time on the mountain before moving around again. Today was windy on the mountain but luckily the mountain did open for operations and that meant an afternoon of shred! [singlepic id=9875 w=400 h=533 float=] Now that the camps are done, Timberline is your own playground. The public park has taken over HCSC’s park and looks to be opening up tomorrow hopefully. It’s definitely the best time to be on the mountain, no lines, great people and still great snow on Palmer chairlift.
The last day of camp. Summer has flown by so quickly that it’s hard to believe it’s the last on-snow day and camp is ending. After having such a great progression session yesterday, I headed back to HCSC to finally dial in some tricks that I wanted. Not to say that I couldn’t do it at Windells but being able to be coached by Chris Hargrave to get my tricks helps me much more than trying them on my own. A huge thanks to Corey at HCSC for being so rad with letting me ride their camp the last 2 days. Summer has been unbelievable. I gave up on what society considers norm (job, house, responsibility) to come out to Hood and snowboard for the summer. While I am still unsure what the future holds…the journey is amazing and that’s what counts. [singlepic id=9864 w=300 h=533 float=] It’s been fun being able to ride both HCSC since I spent the entire summer at Windells and have fun on their features.
When it comes to snowboarding at Mt Hood, there is only one camp that’s 100% snowboarders and that’s High Cascade Snowboard Camp located right next to Windells on the mountain. I had the opportunity earlier this summer to check out HCSC when Snowboarder Magazine came to town and I had a blast riding there for a couple days. So when my good friend Chris Hargrave from Burton Academy came out to coach at HCSC for this last session and offered to help me with tricks, I knew that there was no turning down that chance. [singlepic id=9854 w=600 h=338 float=] This summer at Hood has been about progression but it’s been tougher when working on my progression since coaches are busy with their students and there are plenty of days where I ride alone without pushing myself. Granted I’m doing better but I still want more from my park riding. I used to work with Chris in AASI-NW as clinic leaders and I love his teaching style, it’s easy because there are steps he gives you to reach the goal. Plus Chris pushes me, he won’t accept me being weak…and I need that. Today we worked on backside butters, switch […]

It’s the weekend for Windells Camp which means most of the staff disperses to the coast or into the woods and Timberline has less people so it’s the perfect time for getting up to ride. Public park is still holding up with a jump line and rail features but the only downside is the hike out at the bottom so most people hike the features. For us it meant getting tons of laps in on Palmer before heading to the park to end the day on. When the camps close down, the features close down but it makes for more features that you can create on the slopes. Big piles of snow that become jumps, jibs and just plain fun to be ridden.
