This year has been interesting for my riding, I’m jumping everyday now! I never really wanted to but I’m feeling more comfortable and just having fun with it. I probably won’t ever hit big jumps again but right now I’m enjoying the small jumps in the Forest Trail and Wonderland Parks. Today I hit more jumps than the day before but I was also riding for Danny today so maybe that’s why I felt the need for more air time. My thoughts are with Danny and his recovery! [singlepic id=10533 w=500 h=281 float=] Today was a great day to get out for riding because it meant trying the new Never Summer Proto CT board coming out for 2012. This all-mountain true twin will come in a regular and wide version for 2012 and is a blend of the SL/Evo. [singlepic id=10532 w=300 h=533 float=] Adina and myself on the lift [singlepic id=10534 w=500 h=281 float=] Today was quick laps through Forest Trail Park since I didn’t have much time to ride. Definitely excited for SIA coming up next week and the crazy schedule that comes with it.

It’s another beautiful (well overcast) day in Whistler, BC but the Grenade Games make every day a good day on the slopes with the fun antics, good riders and all around good times. I headed up with evo’s Molly, Chris, Gorio and Amy to check out the superpipe competition. Of all the pipe contests I’ve been to; the Grenade Games superpipe event is the most mellow but fun to watch. You never know who will take home the prize and you have a eclectic mix of riders trying (or just having fun not really trying). [singlepic id=8859 w=400 h=267 float=] Riders at the top of the superpipe waiting to drop in [singlepic id=8844 w=400 h=267 float=] The Grenade Games superpipe was very popular with skiers and riders that lined each side to watch the riders throw down. I loved seeing the line of people and their boards on the ground all the way down the pipe. [singlepic id=8845 w=267 h=401 float=] Myself at the top of the superpipe [singlepic id=8846 w=400 h=267 float=] Justin Lamoureux threw down all day at the pipe, consistent big airs and impressing the crowd. I was surprised he only won 3rd since I thought he […]

Yesterday I received a call from the local newspaper that they had been recommended to use me in a local piece in the upcoming Steamboat magazine for next winter. I was pretty amazed that my name was tossed around (thanks Jon!) and the article was on local’s favorite runs/parts of the mountain. It meant today being on the mountain to meet up with them and get a shot for the paper/magazine that they can use. [singlepic id=8116 w=400 h=300 float=] I was totally up for being the halfpipe girl since I do enjoy riding halfpipe during my ride breaks. I’m still not going pro anytime but I enjoy cranking the music and trying. [singlepic id=8115 w=400 h=300 float=] So at lunch today I met up with John from the paper who was going to take my photo and it’s a good thing I never went into professional snowboarding/modeling because I can’t control my nerves when the time comes. I’ve ridden pipe thousands of times and today I was soo nervous that every run got worse. But I think we got a shot that might work so we’ll see in the future how it comes out and I’m stoked to be […]

Throughout the week the qualifiers have been going on at Breckenridge for the Totino’s Open aka Dew Tour and while I missed them, I was happy to come down for the finals today and tomorrow. Waking up to this view of Breckenridge Mountain this morning was amazing. [singlepic id=7102 w=400 h=267 float=] I wasn’t sure what to expect with the Totino’s Open/Dew Tour at Breckenridge after watching the events earlier this week, I definitely thought it was the commercialized version of snowboarding. I was kind of blown away by the sponsors that have their hand in snowboarding but as a result it was a huge turnout from crowds. [singlepic id=7115 w=400 h=267 float=] I went out last night to the bars which was a lot of fun but definitely meant a later start this morning, unfortunately missing the women’s pipe finals. As much as I love watching and promoting women, the men go higher and bigger. [singlepic id=7095 w=400 h=267 float=] It’s been an interesting journey when it comes to being recognized as a form of media by major outlets & contests. Luckily for me, the blog has been tremendous in the growth and recognition so that I can get […]

The Copper Superpipe opened today as the first halfpipe in the United States and during a non-Olympic year it might have gone unnoticed but with the Olympics around the corner it was a very busy superpipe training day. Tom and I headed over to Copper to enjoy an easy day on the slopes and get some turns in before I headed home to Steamboat. I’m still feeling sick and under the weather so it probably wasn’t the best idea to hit the slopes but I have yet to take it easy. The best part of the day was the lack of crowds at Copper, it was a lot less busy than I expected it to be. Waiting to drop in [singlepic id=6897 w=400 h=300 float=] Even before I got on the chairlift, I ran into Louie Vito in line and we caught up quickly. He gave me props on the 686 KR3W Insulated Jacket I’ve been rocking. His training has begun for the Olympics so definitely wish him luck! The Terrain Park at Copper under American Eagle chairlift. I’m able to hit the first two boxes now, flat box and flat-down box. Woohoo!
I wasn’t sure if I would make it on the hill but it was a good day to break from work, enjoy the sun and lap the superpipe. Winds were high so the gondola was not running by the time I got up and other chairlifts were closed but luckily the park chair and Christie Peak was all I needed. It’s already March but today I didn’t even wear a jacket snowboarding. I wore a t-shirt and my 686 button up, that was enough even with the winds blasting. Lower mountain is slush, it’s like spring riding at A-Basin right now. I have some readers of the blog in town which is always great to meet people I email back and forth it, in person. Jeremy and Skyler are in steamboat on vacation, stopped by to say hi to me at work and hopefully we can take some laps tomorrow on the mountain. Today I took a ride break just by myself with the Capita Midnight.Just lapping the superpipe was good, cranked the music and rode by myself. I saw a couple people I knew but it was fun to just ride alone. One thing when I ride alone […]

I made sure to Nikwax my outerwear last night for my trip to Washington tonight. It rarely rains in Steamboat, I can count on 2 hands the number of times I have seen it rain in Steamboat in the past 3 years. I decided just in case it wouldn’t be a bad idea to re-waterproof my gear. Now my clothes are fresh, clean and smell great! I drove to Breck last night so I could spent this morning on the mountain before flying out of Denver. I gotta admit when someone pisses you off, it’s probably not a good day to ride superpipe or maybe it is…because I was so angry that I started to take it out on the pipe and either the board made me go higher or the fact that I needed to let some energy out did the trick. Riding does make me feel better. It was the last day with the Flow Team and a perfect day to really test it in the perfect superpipe at Breckenridge.I met up with Lauren and Adrian for the day. We made laps through Park Lane which for a friday had a good flow of people, it was awesome […]

There’s one day of the year that I go out snowboarding to remember friends that are no longer on the mountain and that was today. I’m sure they are riding powder somewhere where they have epic powder fields and bluebird days. Someday I’ll join them but for now I’m enjoying snowboarding when I can. Here’s the video from today’s shredding, mixture of park and pipe. I need to get more footage of me riding but it’s so easy to film the people I ride with.Steamboat 2/14/09 from Shayboarder on Vimeo. I managed to hit the snow with my co-worker to take park and pipe laps. I needed someone to give me criticism and push me to step up my game. I wasn’t doing so hot in the superpipe and it was good to ride with someone who was telling me that. The crowds from Presidents weekend have died down a lot. Yesterday was packed on the mountain and I had hoped that today would be less busy. Greg the Rockies Flow Rep let me borrow a Flow Team from the demo’s so I could spend some time with it and actually review it more than a couple runs.
I woke up in Keystone but decided to hit up Breckenridge for the day for something new. Some of the crew stayed at Keystone and K had to work so I called up Zac from Hybrid Sessions to meet up and ride for the day. We made a mini video of today’s riding, some groomers, some park and some superpipe. Zac was kind enough to follow me into the superpipe and catch me on film…so enjoy! Breckenridge 1/18/09 from Shayboarder on Vimeo. Photo: Hybrid Sessions It hasn’t been snowing in Colorado, bluebird days and warm weather for the past couple days. It was pretty warm today on the mountain and the breeze was nice to have at the top of the chair. Despite the crowds on the mountain and some long lines, I didn’t notice that many people on the runs. The park was busy but still rideable and the superpipe had some amazing riders throwing down but still room for us to ride in.
Shredding Part 2 Well we left A-Basin and I offered up the idea to check out Breck to do some hiking. Breck’s superpipe is a super easy hike from the base of Peak 8 and really I just wanted to ride halfpipe. Breckenridge closed last month but the snow conditions are still amazing on the mountain. Most mountains will run a cat down the center of a halfpipe after closing…to ensure that no one will ride it. It really is a bummer but I can see how some people ruin it for others. I take full responsibility for my actions. We drove up and from the parking lot…could see it was rideable. Plus there were other features set up. Naturally walked up the stairs Not a bad hike from the bottom of the chairlift The only downside to the halfpipe in it’s current state was the opening of dirt at the bottom and occasionally some small pieces of wood in the pipe. It was wide with varying snow conditions…you had to adjust to bumps along each transition…making it more difficult to ride pipe. Breck still has a ton of snow. We were able to see fresh lines down the top […]
