A home away from home. For the past month, that was the Mountain Sky Hotel in Valdez, Alaska. It came with all the amenities you expect from a hotel; complimentary breakfast, coffee, comfy beds, swimming pool, hot tub and daily cleaning service. But it also came with a new watering hole called the 32° Lounge and Grill that became the hub for gathering each evening. Located right in the center of Valdez, the Mountain Sky Hotel was walking distance to everything you needed from bars to restaurants to grocery stores. It was still a good 40 miles to Thompson Pass where the Flow Tailgate AK experience was taking place but it offered a retreat with running water, laundry and warm beds each evening. I arrived in Valdez a week prior to the start of Flow Tailgate AK and used the quiet time to finish up work in my hotel room and wander around the town of Valdez. It was the perfect opportunity to take photos of the harbor, figure out which coffee shop was my favorite (Sacred Grounds Expresso was it) and enjoy the calm before the storm. A month in a hotel can be quite a long time but […]

After a day off to rest, it was time for Tailgate Alaska and Flow Snowboarding to host the Flow World Freeride Championship Finals. The final location was determined late the night before so even riders didn’t know what they would be battling out on. The end result was heli and sled access to the backside of Python and the top 10 riders (two women and eight men) with one run to prove themselves as the ultimate winner. It was a busy morning to get debriefed and set up the media list for the heli ride to the contest venue. I ended up getting a sled ride up thanks to Big Mountain Taxi. Weather was cooperating and instead of a overcast day, it turned into a perfect bluebird day for everyone. The finals was harder to get to than the qualifiers so there was less of an audience but those who made it up were stoked to watch it all go down. Riders after the drop off at the bottom so they can view the terrain and wait for the next heli ride to the top of the mountain. The first to drop was Donny Mills, a Valdez local and creator […]

The best freeriders took to the mountain yesterday for a chance to qualify for the Flow World Freeride Championship Qualifiers in a midst of steeps, rocks, drops and powder. Instead of riding the mountains around them, everyone gathered at Bro Bowl to watch the qualifiers go down with over 20 athletes taking two runs to try to garner a place in the finals. The crowd watched along a safe zone at the base of the mountain with front row seating, beers and the best views. Thanks to Nate from 907 snowcat, I ended up getting a ride up to the event just after it began. It allowed me to have a quiet nap in the sunshine while everyone else was shuttled up in the morning. The terrain offered up a huge variety for riders, anything from straight powder runs to cornice drops to bands of rocks. The snow safety team was on hand and ready for avalanches during each run. Competitors were pretty good with the sluff that came down and the only major incident was Sarka’s avalanche runout. To get an idea of how big the riders went. Here’s Flow rider Sarka Pancochova who is tiny in size but […]

The past couple days in Alaska have been “down days” when the weather comes in and you take a break from the mountains till the snow piles up and the sun comes out. It was a good break and time to figure out the next plan of attack. A couple of the Flow guys mentioned a day of snowcat and I was really happy with my first day with 907 before Tailgate Alaska began so I mentioned all of us heading up for the day with them. Eventually it grew from a couple of us to almost a full cat of people we knew who wanted to spend a day shredding. Plus the weather finally cleared and delivered a perfectly warm bluebird day on the mountain. Our crew for the day comprised of Kevin and Donny from Flow, Joseph from Evo, Peter and Jimmy who are under my wing at Tailgate, Gilly who does everything, pro-snowboarder Kevin Jones and his fiance Danielle, two skiers who I forgot their names but were super nice, Rasmus from Chuckbuddies, Gabe Smith who is competing in the Freeride Championships, the guides (Susan and Ryder) and myself. It was a full snowcat of rad people. […]

Tailgate Alaska is well underway at Thompson Pass. It’s been beautiful every day and today was a great day to get out on the mountain. Gilly was kind enough to bump us with his sled so we could get in our laps for the day. We headed up to below Bro Bowl to get in turns. The snow was mixed, it’s been settling since there hasn’t been new snow and there’s an assortment of heavy snow to lighter snow depending on where the sun/shade has been throughout the day. Today was Tony and myself taking laps. Tony won a trip to Tailgate Alaska at the SIA Tradeshow so he flew out from Wisconsin for the fun. Here’s the shot of him riding down the mountain with me. For our last run, we met up with the rest of our crew to shred down to basecamp. They took the snowcat up to where we were riding, $25 will get you one ride up.

It took a while for splitboarding to get kicked into full gear but now that I’m in Alaska it’s finally happening. It’s the cheapest way up the mountain and a great way to explore around the mountain. I ended up heading out with Tony, Peter and Jordan for a morning trek to the ice cave. It was a good warm-up for Alaska splitboarding. Myself on the skin up. A huge thanks to my grandma Sue for investing in my future, she bought me a BCA Avalanche Airbag for backcountry in Alaska. Definitely the fastest way up the mountain is sled (snowmachine in AK). We took our time on the hike/skin up and Nico took 2 minutes to get to us. We skinned up to the Worthington glacier where we were able to check out the ice cave. It was a cool spot and breathtaking to see the really blue icy cold glacier.
