To say I was excited to win a day of Eagle Pass Heliskiing was an understatement. It was a dream come true and I was so excited, so stoked and so ready for my first experience on a heli. Despite all the anticipation, I made sure to get a good night’s sleep to prepare myself for today. I was nervous about it, but didn’t let nerves take over. I wanted this experience to be amazing and it definitely delivered despite some weather complications in the morning. This morning, we met up at 8am at the Tailgate BC base camp where Eagle Pass Heliskiing had their booth. I arrived early so I could switch out boards, grab my pre-made lunch from the restaurant and double check the gear I needed. There were a couple other groups so I wasn’t sure which one I would be in but I was pretty happy to be getting out no matter who I was riding with. We made our way over to the Three Valley Gap where we went over avalanche and backcountry safety, practiced beacon finding and got geared up for the day. It felt good to have my avy 1 accomplished just in […]

Sometimes there are much needed down days, that was day 4 at Tailgate BC. The weather was stormy at basecamp and a bit of writing was calling my name. Plus it gave me the chance to really meet, greet and hang out for the afternoon/evening. I’m still pretty sore from snowmobiling so a down day is a good choice so I can feel great for tomorrow’s heli time with Eagle Pass Heliskiing. One of the most remarkable things about Tailgate BC is how many people you are meeting and getting to know. There’s a really fun group that attends events like this and you end up getting to know them pretty well. I’ve been lucky to room with Natalie Langmann during the visit and it’s been great hearing her stories about writing in the industry. The weather meant being out in the elements at the Tailgate BC and creating bonding moments with a bit of axe throwing, beer drinking and ping pong. It was a pretty fun way to spend the afternoon while waiting for others to get off the mountain.

The Flow Tailgate BC is underway in Revelstoke, British Columbia and it’s pretty fun to be part of the experience. Thursday was arrival, setting up, meeting new faces and riding Revelstoke Mountain Resort. Today was getting out into the backcountry, back on the sled and going over avalanche safety in the BC backcountry. It’s a pretty free flowing event, there’s no rules, no meetings, no set schedule. Just show up, make friends and make your way into the backcountry or the mountain. I’m staying right across the street from the basecamp so it’s an easy walk each morning to figure out the plan of the day. This morning, Mark Sullivan got me set up with Revelstoke guide Jeremy to get into the backcountry via snowmobiles. It’s been my first time this season to get out on a sled but definitely glad to be able to join in the group and experience the trails on Boulder Mountain. We gathered the group up at the base and hit the trails. It took some time to get back comfortable on the sled and I went slower than a lot of the more seasoned snowmobilers but I rode my own sled and made it! […]

After weeks of anticipation, Tailgate BC has finally arrived in Revelstoke, British Columbia. The next five days offer up a party in the parking lot mixed with a range of snow sports from the backcountry to the resort. We arrived late last night into Revelstoke and woke up bright and early to get a feel for the surrounding mountains. It’s pretty incredible to be part of the first Tailgate BC. It’s a cool concept to be able to bring people together on and off the mountains for a couple days especially in a region like Revelstoke. Over the course of today, I was able to meet people from the US and Canada who are part of this new experience. It wasn’t easy getting to Tailgate BC but despite the late start, everyone pulled together to get things done. Eventually the vehicles were gone, more tents came up and the beer garden/fire pit was added to the parking lot. I took this photo this morning during the rush of getting everything setup for Tailgate BC. I wasn’t sure on the plan for today but heading to Revelstoke Mountain Resort was on the list. I managed to carpool to the mountain with […]

The next adventure is just beginning! Yesterday I intentionally stayed off the slopes so I could have a day to myself, catch up on blogging and get everything clean and packed for traveling. Today I’m hitting the highway with Andy and Nico so we can make our way to Canada for the inaugural Tailgate BC kicking off in Revelstoke tomorrow. Over the next five days, Tailgate BC will be taking over Revelstoke for good times tailgating and snowboarding/skiing. I’m pretty excited to be attending the event, seeing familiar faces and getting out in some deep snow for the weekend. I’ve packed my splitboard, backcountry gear and am picking up a powder board along the way. The best part about this journey is helping out and assisting with the media during Tailgate BC. I’ll be updating Shayboarder with posts but make sure to follow me on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram (Shayboarder). Here’s to the next journey!
