One of the best perks of being in Whistler for the Telus Festival is the demo days that go on each weekend. Anyone with a ID and credit card can check out the 2013 snowboards from a ton of brands at Whistler Mountain. I headed up despite all the crew riding Blackcomb and lapped Whistler for the day with my music and a couple boards underneath my feet to review. Since I was riding alone, I didn’t take much for photos and just enjoyed a peaceful day on the mountain in the sunshine. It was really good to have my ipod and headphones with me so I could just cruise and get a feel for boards. I ended up taking out Endeavor boards for the day, the Boyfriend and Colour Series got a good amount of ride time for each board. For the afternoon, I headed onto the Peak to Peak to get over Blackcomb for a ride down to Merlins to meet up with the crew. Blackcomb was definitely slushier and softer snow for the day but super fun to ride down and just haul! The night ended with the Big Air competition and watching from the sidelines with […]

After a couple days of much needed rest, I hit the highway north to Whistler. Whistler Blackcomb has had an amazing winter and it’s still in full force! I always try to come up for the Telus Festival because it’s always such a good time on the mountain, apres around town and at the parties every night. This year coming up to Whistler was more about a vacation than anything else. Each day started late, I enjoyed lounging around and making my way to the mountain when I felt like it. I knew a couple groups of people on the mountain each day so meeting up was pretty easy. I started the morning meeting up with Moselle, a friend who lives in Vancouver. She was getting her snowboard legs back under her so it was a good start to the morning. Whistler got 20cm’s of snow overnight so it was also a fresh snow day but chopped by the time we made it out. For the afternoon, we met up with Michelle, Scott, Lisa and Billy at the top to make some laps. It was good to get in a group lap with them and really charge with Michelle.
There are many reasons to come to Whistler for the Telus Festival but one of the biggest reasons for me (besides the snowboarding) is the Pro Photographer Showdown. Photographers are able to capture so many amazing moments and at this event, they can compose their best images into a slideshow tuned perfectly with music that brings chills to the audience. It’s sold out every year for good reason, it’s the best photographers showcasing their best work for a chance at 10,000. The photographers this year were: Scott Serfas, Camilla Stoddart, Adam Moran, Brian Nevins and Jeff Patterson. Many of the names might be familiar because they are heavily snowboarding focused. Scott Serfas is the principal photographer with Art of Flight/Travis Rice, Adam Moran is the team photographer for Burton and Jeff Patterson is behind a lot of Snowboard Canada photography. Camilla and Brian were new names but really for me, wowed with their images. The crowd at the event is always amazing and stoked to be there. Within minutes there were familiar faces and hugs from the Endeavor crew. Later on, I ran into Kevin Sansalone and got to catch up with friends from evo during the night.
One of the most popular events at the Telus Ski & Snowboard Festival in Whistler, BC is the pro photographer showdown and it went down on Thursday night at the conference centre (sold out as usual). This was the first year that I bought a ticket in advance and made it into the show to see what the commotion was about. The end result was sitting through amazing photography and everyone enjoying what photos can show & tell to us. [singlepic id=8833 w=400 h=300 float=] 6 photographers were chosen to display a slideshow of their work presented with music to match, the shows entertain and inspire the audience. The photographers this year were: Grant Gunderson, Brian Bielmann, Yves Garneau, Jeremy Koreski, Mason Mashon, Erik Seo. The photography varied from sports like surfing, snowboarding and biking to a mix of portrait and lifestyle shots. Each photographer took their own take on what they covered and some brilliant shots came out of it.
The journey yesterday took longer than expected but it was packed full of fun stops along the way until I reached my final destination of Whistler, BC. I arrived just in time to drop off my bags and pick up my friend Carrie before we headed to the Asymbol Exhibit and Opening Party. The Asymobol exhibit unveiled featured work of Mike Parillo, Ari Marcopoulos, Jamie Lynn, Jeff Curtes, Scott Lenhardt, Danny Zapalac, Nick Russian, Tim Zimmerman, Adam Haynes, Matt French, Mike Blabac, Trent Mitchell and I AM Snowboarding. It took the masterpieces of photographers and artists and created them into an art exhibit that snowboarders can relate to and share the stoke on. The opening party was filled with many of the pro snowboarders gracing the images but also many riders that support the cause. We arrived early which ensured us entrance into the gallery and time to check out each work before the place was packed which didn’t take long. [singlepic id=8804 w=400 h=300 float=] My favorite piece at the exhibit was The Pass by Ari Marcopoulos featuring Bryan Iguchi and Johan Olofsson on Teton Pass in Jackson Hole Wyoming.
It’s April which means it’s time to head back to Washington & Whistler! I try to hit up Whistler at least once every year for my favorite time of year, the Telus Festival when snowboarding meets music meets canadian beer. This year the Grenade Games are doing their 6th year and 2nd year in Whistler which means quite the possibilities for trouble in the mountains. I’m flying back home to Seattle to take in a couple days with family & friends before I head up to Whistler to end the remainder of my trip snowboarding and enjoying all the events going on in Whistler next week for Telus Festival. This trip gives me a couple new blog opportunities that I have in the works, I’ll be making stops and high 5’ing along the drive to Whistler. The best part is I’ll be able to demo a brand of snowboard that everyone wants to know about plus do more on-snow demos on the demo day that goes on. For the most part, I’ll be enjoying it all and stoked to come back this year.
Monday’s conditions on the mountain were less than stellar. A couple people went up early to scout it out while the rest of us lazily got ready. The texts back to us said no visibility and a couple inches of snow on top of ice. That group soon came down and joined us for the day. So Monday was relaxing, hang out, movies and poker kind of day. Tuesday was my last day on the mountain before I had to drive back to Seattle. We made it up relatively early with our group…everyone recovered who had missed riding before. I hooked Karmel up with riding the 155cm Never Summer Evo R so she could try out a rocker board for the first time. Making our way up the mountain Yesterday it snowed most of the day in the village, so today there were freshies up on top of the mountain. We made our way up high without any crowds on the mou ntain. It was quite empty for 10am. Mixture of clouds and sun T0 get up to the glacier you have to take the T-bar and I hate t-bar’s as a snowboarder. But we managed to get up.
We headed up to Whistler to ride for the day. It was a late start and luckily a Starbucks stop was on the way before hitting up the Whistler gondola in the base. We took one run all together. Riding Whistler is just beautiful Mike showing off the top of Whistler goods Kendra Mike, Kendra and Joe on the chairlift behind us with the view of Creekside Some of the group went inside for lunch and recovered from the night before by taking it easy on riding. I went with Mark and Karmel so we could enjoy the demo’s for the day. Since it was a late start we weren’t able to demo too many boards. But the companies at the demos were Endeavor, Capita, Ride, Salomon, Never Summer, Prior, and Signal. It was a good chance to get on more 08-09 snowboards.
Yesterday I flew to Denver, then Seattle and then drove my ass up to Whistler. I landed in Seattle at 9:30pm and arrived in Whistler by 3:30am. It was quite a journey to make it but I was dedicated and with a 4-pack of Red Bull I made it. I’ve been to Whistler-Blackcomb many times, when I used to live in Seattle it was a trip I made a couple times a year so I’m familiar with the mountains and the village. Today I woke up with 4 hours of sleep in a friends condo here in Whistler. Most of the people I’m staying with are snowboard.com friends including Joe, Mike, Kendra, and Karmel. We’ve hung out before and had good times and definitely this trip is about good times. First chairlift up from upper Blackcomb village We headed up to ride Blackcomb for the day. Since we were on the mountain before 9am…it was a bit icy and hardpacked conditions.
