Until the snow comes, it means laps in the sunshine on the groomers. It’s still good that the mountain is open, there’s snow and snowboarding still makes me happy. Today was my day off, perfect for getting back into the easy park for a couple laps in between the big park and groomers. Thanks to the skier for getting shots of me. Right now the easy park is on Scout Trail with two flat boxes and a down box. All ride-on (they weren’t in the early season park) so a lot easier than before. Since it was a Monday, the easy park was practically empty and you could lap over and over and over without a line.

When I first saw the mock-up drawing for the Third Shift contest, I was pretty much blown away. It meant constructing a town square in the terrain park that was literally a urban jump/jib contest over and onto buildings. For the northwest, it was pretty rad to see freestyle progression come here and be on the slopes so anyone could watch. This was an event that would push progression for local skiers and riders. Earlier this week, I joined on to contribute to Teton Gravity Research so I’ll be working with them to take photos and share different stories than I would post on Shayboarder.com. The Red Bull Third Shift article for TGR is here, so definitely check it out. I headed up to Snoqualmie early so I could get in some powder turns before the event. I just didn’t imagine that the mountain received 2 feet of snow but by the time I arrived, there was still powder turns to be enjoyed. With all the new snow, the Summit at Snoqualmie park crew did a great job of maintaining the features and making sure it was rideable. By the time I arrived at the top of the jump course, […]

The vibe at June Mountain has always been great. It’s a mountain that is full of good times. I finally talked the skier into joining me for a June day despite the park not being insanely huge right now. We ended up having a great day on the slopes, working on tricks in the mini park. He worked on spins and I worked on hitting more features. There’s still only one run open at June but it’s one run that has soft snow conditions and barely anyone sharing it with you. We worked on switch riding for the run each time and ended up hiking park a lot of the day. Today was a good day for myself. I finally started riding the long lift tower (for some reason metal tubes scare me) and ended up working on bonks on the barrels and a couple tricks on the flat box. Excited to head up to South Lake Tahoe tomorrow to ride Heavenly the next two days. Always fun to check out other mountains and get a feel for conditions around California right now.

It felt really good to start 2012 on the slopes. Snowboarding makes me happy. It might not have been powder or a ton of terrain, but sometimes it can be one run doing something you love to make it matter. I hope everyone else enjoyed a good start to 2012. This time of year means new boots, specifically 12-13 Vans Boots to test out. Last year I got on board with their wear test to offer feedback (like I had with the 100 day perspective) in intervals of trying the boots after certain days. Since I don’t review boots on Shayboarder, it’s fun to be able to give feedback to them early enough to impact future boot design. I’m currently on the Ferra women’s boots testing them out. Conditions today were great on the one run that was open. You could ride up to the lift each time and only encounter a small line if any. Despite no new snow, the current snow is holding up good. I watched a lot of new snowboarders progressing and earning their learning time. The new Signal Snowboards rail was at the base of the chairlift, looks like the park crew will be adding […]

Hard to believe the year is coming to an end but at the same time 2012 means unlimited possibilities for the future. Friday on the snow meant heading over to June Mountain to avoid the crowds and have a run practically to myself. Luckily for me, the June park crew was out riding so I didn’t have to ride alone. The one run open is Mambo but it’s in great condition for snow. It’s soft, easy to ride and isn’t bumped out or icy. The park has a couple more features and crew changed things up so definitely a small variety to hit. Today I finally rode the barrel bonk feature and each day I’ll try to hit one more feature.

When you work for a ski resort, you get used to working holidays and never enjoying the day off. This year, I was expecting to spend Thanksgiving with family so I asked for the time off but I ended up staying in Mammoth instead for my days off. I wasn’t sure about riding on Thanksgiving since it’d be busier but my friend Dan convinced me to hit up the mountain with him in the morning. Thanksgiving marked the start of the busyness on the mountain for snowboarding. But even though there were more people, lines weren’t too bad. We ended up sticking to Forest Trail and Main Park laps so we could kind of escape the busy runs. The best part about a 22′ pipe, is the fact that less people ride pipe and feel comfortable going through it so we pretty much had it to ourselves every lap through. Here’s a video of Dan’s pipe run.

Last year I believe it was almost January before the pipe was completed. This year it’s November and the Mammoth 22′ pipe opened today, a whole month before last season. It helped make the mountain look a little bit more like winter but we still need more snow to make for a total winter experience. I headed out on my ride break so I could lap the mountain, freeride and get in some pipe runs with Pat Stahl and his friends for some fun laps on the mountain. We lapped through park, which has a bunch of features and hopefully more park opening this week. I cannot wait for Forest Trail to open, it’s my favorite on the mountain.

While I was signing up for classes at Penn State I decided that maybe I should look for some jobs in the mountains, take a little break from school, and see where this snowboarding thing can take me. Mammoth Mountain just happened to be the first to call me back and offer me a job making snow for the resort. With no idea what to expect, I packed my bags, caught a flight to Reno, then a bus to Mammoth Lakes, CA and started working on the mountain in the fall of 2002.
You know your life is easy when the only decision you make in the morning is what mountain to snowboard at. I had made the decision to skip out on Steamboat’s closing day in order to ride Breckenridge for the BSG demo day but a couple factors were involved. [singlepic id=8725 w=400 h=300 float=] A couple factors helped make the decision: #1 I wanted to snowboard versus drink #2 I needed to try some late season demos for a couple of you guys (whoever asked for the TRS is the reason I woke up at 8am from my warm comfortable bed) #3 Steamboat was closing the lifts 2 hours early for closing day but Breck would be running normal life hours. All those factored in and made it easy to decide to skip closing day festivities in order to get my snowboard shred fix with demos. I didn’t regret the decision at all today, I woke up after 8am to hit the road and made the easy bluebird drive to Breckenridge 2 hours away where I texted my friends once I got into town. I made it to the demo tents by 10:30am and by 11am was getting on the […]
