What a day. Today made my Thanksgiving weekend. Maybe it was the lack of crowds, the good conditions, the sunshine or maybe it was all those combined with good people. Ever since visiting Northstar last weekend, it just keeps getting better and better. Today we woke up early, left a sleeping house in North Tahoe and made our way to Northstar for a morning of shred before heading back to Mammoth. At the base, the skier and I met up with our good friend Adam and later on joined up with Jenise for park laps. The sun was out, the temperatures were slightly warmer and the mountain was ours (well, ours and a couple others). We headed up to the top of the mountain to make good morning laps, carving up the corduroy with runs to ourselves and could ride up to the lift with no lines each time. One thing I’ve noticed at Northstar is the employees are happy and it shows. It makes you happy to be around happy people who are having fun. After warming up with laps on the Comstock Express lift, we headed over to Vista Express to lap the park and have fun. The park […]

Before I moved to California, I had never heard of Sugarbowl but all of a sudden everyone I was talking to near Tahoe were passholders to this resort including my family. Luckily for me, I got to find out first hand why this mountain offers it all and enjoy a great day on the slopes after Thanksgiving. [singlepic id=10225 w=500 h=281 float=] Sugarbowl is located in Norden, CA just off of I-80 in Tahoe atop Donner Summit. It has 1,500 acres of riding, 1,500 vertical feet and averages 500 inches annually. Tahoe received a couple feet of snow which meant instead of a December 10th opening, Sugarbowl was able to open right before Thanksgiving with a good amount of terrain and lifts in operation. In fact it didn’t look like they had only been open 3 days by the time I arrived because everything seemed dialed with staff and the operations. [singlepic id=10217 w=500 h=281 float=] Friday at Sugarbowl was perfect weather with visibility for miles and despite a packed parking lot, barely any crowds on the mountain. It spread out better than I imagined and especially the upper mountain you had runs to yourself.
