For 13 years, Transworld has done the Good Wood Test to determine the best boards in snowboarding. With all the 2012 boards out, they do the test each year in the spring with selected riders to find out the most popular boards of the bunch. This year the Good Wood Test was in Mammoth, they started earlier this week on the mountain and today was the last day for the testers to evaluate the boards. Two years ago Transworld let me experience the test at Breckenridge where I blogged about the experience and today I stopped by the test to check it out again and borrow a couple boards for myself. A huge thanks to Ben and Annie for allowing me to experience it once again. Transworld Good Wood Testers [singlepic id=11495 w=500 h=281 float=] The amount of boards at the Transworld Good Wood Test is amazing, it fills a whole room. There are tech guys on hand to switch out boards and riders have boards assigned to them to ride for the day. There are tons of brands, models and sizes to choose from. Basically if you love riding boards, this is your library of awe to choose from. […]

When it comes to snowboard tests, the Good Wood is the longest running and most well known test that defines a list of boards to consider for the upcoming season. I’ve been able to go behind the scenes with the Good Wood Test in the past to check out how they try and test each snowboard. With fall just around the corner, the 2011 Good Wood results have hit the newstands and here’s the list in case you haven’t seen what boards made the cut for this season. [singlepic id=6062 w=182 h=189 float=] For 2011, the Pipe and Mountain options are missing from the test which means that the Good Wood is straight up Park Boards once again. Over the years I’ve reviewed a good amount of the boards in this list but this list also features boards that I haven’t had the opportunity to take out yet. The women’s list has the majority of boards I’ve ridden and favorites like the Eco Pop, Vixen, Eminence and Lipstick made the list. It’s interesting to see that boards like the TRS and Jib Stick are crossing over into mens and womens and I totally agree on the slim version of men’s […]

Since 1987, Transworld Snowboarding has been at the forefront of snowboarding for print publications and a name that snowboarders turn to each day. It wasn’t a difficult decision to decide to visit the major publication and see how things go down behind such an influential name in snowboarding. Transworld was the third stop on the second day of the adventure with a brand new office they just moved into, they are minutes away from many other action sports companies houses in So-Cal. I received a call from Annie Fast to meet them for lunch before heading to the Transworld office. When I showed up to grab lunch with Annie, I certainly wasn’t expecting to see Bryan Iguchi, Seth Huot, Zac Marben and Gigi Rüf standing there in line with Annie. Just another typical day for them and an extraordinary one for me. We were joined by a crew of people from Camp of Champions also visiting the office and a couple of the Volcom crew on hand with the team riders. After lunch, Annie and I made our way to the office. [singlepic id=6062 w=182 h=189 float=] I’ve ridden 6 of the men’s winning boards and 6 of the women’s winning boards and when I look at the list of boards none of them really surprise me especially ones that I have ridden in previous years and know what the board is like. When I was able to first try 09-10 boards at the Keystone demos in February, there were a couple boards that stood out like the Park Pickle, Extr-eco and B-pro that were solid boards for any rider and I’m glad to see them on the list. There are other boards I have ridden that I was eh about because I’m not the rider that should ride them. It’s no surprise to me that K2 is a heavy hitter on the list this year, with such a variety of […]

Shay: So tell us about yourself? Mike: For starters I’m used to being on the other side of these questions. Other than that, I’m a Colorado native and hang my one-piece, neon suit in Boulder with my wife and son. I love to eat, drink coffee, and long moonlit walks through alleys. [singlepic id=4477 w=300 h=400 float=] Shay: What is your job title? Mike: My card reads “TransWorld Business Senior Editor.” Shay: Did your parents question your job choice? Mike: No. They were pretty stoked actually as they know I love what I’m doing. Fortunately they didn’t pay for grad school (I’ve got an MBA from Illinois Inst. Of Technology), otherwise their hackles probably would have been up. Shay: What was your first set up? Mike: Sims Kidwell with Sims binders – just found it in my parents’ attic a couple months ago. Reverse camber is definitely not a new concept – that thing looks like a half pipe if you look at the profile. Shay: What is your current set up? Mike: You mean when I leave the bigfoots at home? This year I mostly rode a T.Rice 161.5. That last point five got me out of some hairty […]

[singlepic id=4838 w=400 h=112 float=] Each year in the Transworld Snowboarding resort poll, the readers get to choose their favorite mountains. You fill out the survey on the resorts you’ve ridden and what you think about them based on their parks, lodging, nightlife and overall score. Each year I submit my vote to play a role in what comes out ahead of the others. This year I’ve ridden 13 different resorts from Colorado, Utah, Washington and British Columbia. My best 3 resorts which were Breckenridge, Copper and Whistler/Blackcomb (guess they count as one). These were based on the questions asked, if it was based on powder it might be different. Both Copper and Breckenridge I gave an 8 for overall resort rating, both mountains have a lot to offer from powder to parks for all abilities. I gave Whistler/Blackcomb a 10 for overall resort rating. I mean really 2 mountains in one, is hard to beat let alone it’s Whistler/Blackcomb. A vacation in Whistler/Blackcomb is a snowboarder’s dream. I’ve never been let down by a vacation there and every year I have to go back. It might be a surprise that I didn’t vote for my home […]

For the past 11 years, the Transworld Good Wood Test has set the standard for snowboarding board tests, consistently offering riders a glimpse into popular boards for the next season. While no test is perfect, the Good Wood has worked each year to dial it in and make improvements to the testing format. There have been many debates on if the Good Wood Test is legit and represents a true test of snowboards. I set out to find out the truth. In September, I talked with Annie Fast over the phone about the Good Wood test and received an invite to come see it done in person at Breckenridge. I accepted knowing that seeing it done is more valuable than being told how it’s done. On Thursday, April 16th I made the trek to Breckenridge to witness the Good Wood Test for 2009-2010 boards as they completed their 4th day of testing boards. The Good Wood Test is a collaboration between HCSC and Transworld to put on the test. [singlepic id=5547 w=400 h=267 float=] Each day the riders have a line up of boards selected for them to ride. This eliminates the last minute stress of finding a board and […]

I enjoyed reading articles that the other snowboard magazines would never touch. Who else would discuss the panty trees at mountains or the ode to bikini girl that made me laugh so hard. Your article that broke down outerwear tech…is still something I use to this day. The greatest moments in competitive snowboarding spoke of true stories I wanted to hear more about…Terje’s switch run on the banked slalom. There were so many articles that were fun to read and educated us as riders. You managed to write articles that were classics, that could be used 2 years ago to now. It wasn’t about which rider was the coolest or which fine print techno jacket you had to have…it was articles based on everyday stuff snowboarders should know like how to adjust your bindings properly to your boots or how […]
