What can you do with a 12 hour visit to Anchorage? It turns out a lot! It all started with a three hour flight on Alaska Airlines from Seattle to Anchorage, Alaska arriving just after 8am. My travel companion was the adventurous Nikki who braved the cold temps of Alaska with me. Departing in the dark and seeing the sunrise at 35,000 feet is always worth the journey. I captured the morning glow with a hyperlapse on the AlaskaAir instagram which you can see here. After getting our rental car for the day, we hit the open road and followed the Seward Highway to explore the outer regions of Anchorage. I had remembered Portage Bay from a past visit so we headed in that general direction. The best part of the roadtrip was the fall colors on the highway. Combine those with the snowcapped peaks…and it was photo moments the entire drive. With the cold temps, we did have to adjust to the temperature difference from 70s in Seattle to 30-40s in Anchorage. Even though it was the offseason for visiting, we still were able to explore some great places like the Portage Bay Glacier and Girdwood. We skipped the […]

It was a long winter in Colorado so when it kept snowing in May, I realized I needed to get out into some warm heat and sunshine. Moab, Utah offered up the camping, hiking, biking and heat without traveling too far to get it. Plus it was a far enough, it seemed like a mini vacation on its own. We loaded up the truck with our bikes and arrived late on Friday to find a camping spot. It was just us girls (Rachel and myself) for the first night before other friends (Laura, Nick and family) arrived for Saturday night. As night set in, we got to see the canyon walls lit up around us (still not sure what that was about) which was pretty cool! On Saturday we loaded up the bikes and headed just north of town to ride some easier trails with my dog. I had brought my downhill bike so it was a struggle getting up some of the hills but I made it.I was really proud of Capitadog for staying with us during the ride and leading the way. Really looking forward to spending more time on the bike this summer enjoying bike parks in […]

When it goes to magazine reviews, the Good Wood test is the most popular and longest running snowboard test. The Good Wood Test was designed to give the best performing park and all-mountain boards the chance to standout among the rest of the boards. For 2013, boards are split between men and women, over and under $450 in all mountain and park categories. TWS made a point of explaining the testing, how a board is scored and who the testers are. I’ve ridden over ten of the boards that made the list for this year. Standout boards for men’s all-mountain were the Capita BSOD, Lib T.Rice, TRS and Greats. For men’s park, the Salomonder and Ultrafear were favorites when I rode them in years past. For the women’s results, I completely agree with all of the all-mountain boards and can see how the other boards won for park. The best way to interpret this list is see what works for you and try it for yourself…your own personal test matters more than anything else.
After weeks of planning, organizing and getting ready for a move…it was finally time. Since I can no longer call Mammoth Lakes home, I packed up my truck and hit the open highway to bring my belongings up to Washington. I’m not quite sure where the end of the road is yet but Washington is my current waiting room and having a stellar season so far. [singlepic id=12893 w=341 h=452 float=] My first destination was Lake Tahoe where I rode Northstar and Heavenly, met up with the Snowcial conference and hung out with rad people in the industry. It was quite the precursor to SIA and offered up a fun bit of riding before the storms hit California. I left Tahoe right as the storms were starting to roll in (I know, crazy right). But I chose to have family time over snowboarding time. There are times in life when you realize how important family is and I’m now in that position. I gladly took a couple days off of snowboarding to be able to spend time with my brother, sister-in-law and niece in San Jose before visiting my grandparents in Red Bluff. On Sunday, I finally hit the road […]

In the grand scheme of snowboard tests, the Transworld Snowboarding Good Wood test is the longest running and the most well known test that defines a list of boards to consider each season. I’ve tagged along with the Good Wood Test a couple times to see how they test each snowboard and got to see the Mammoth GW Test in action last spring. Here’s the list of what boards made the cut for this season and my thoughts on the list. For 2012, boards are split between men and women, over and under $400 and all mountain and park categories. When I first started hearing of the boards that won, I was happy to see which boards got recognized. I think it’s a list most like my own taste for reviewed boards from this year and past reviews. For the men, the Stepchild Powder Sucks, GNU Park Pickle/Riders Choice, Lib Tech Attack Banana, TRS and Box Scratcher have always rated high in reviews and been boards that are very popular with riders. For the women, the Arbor Swoon, GNU B-Pro, Roxy Eminence, Smokin Vixen, Arbor Cadence were all boards that offered up great choices for the female riders depending on […]

Along each journey a snowboarder makes, there is one consistent and reliable mode of transportation that gets you from home to shredding. For me, a truck named Betsy the Toyota Tacoma has made every journey, every snowboard trip and has safely brought me home each time. I bought her brand new in 2004 and now 24,000 dollars later I have just made my final payment. [singlepic id=5167 w=448 h=298 float=] I figured if my truck had a name, it might last longer and treat me better. She’s been along for the journey of being dependent to independent. I knew when I bought her that I needed to buy a manual, that I drove too often in the snow and being able to downshift through snowy conditions would be beneficial, unfortunately for me when I bought her I couldn’t drive a stick-shift, I never learned so I bought my brand new truck without ever driving it (thanks dad for test driving it for me). As soon as I got home, I learned to drive it on the street I grew up on…stalling it a lot. After a day of learning to drive a stick-shift, I hit the highway and […]

I’ll be spending 5 days in Seattle and 3 days at Mt Hood. It’s tough leaving a resort town but it’s nice to go back to the hometown every now and then. The World of Snowboarding will still be updated on this journey…I still have stuff to say and experiences to encounter along the way. I am amped to hit up Mt Hood. For those who haven’t been out to Hood in the summer, it’s fun and amazing. Some of my best summers have been spent at Hood, whether it was being a summer liftie living rent free in Rhody or hanging out with friends on the top of the halfpipe, pushing each other to air higher.
