If you’re wondering what mountain has been getting hammered this season, I can tell you Stevens Pass has been getting the goods. The snowbanks are high, the coverage is amazing and today was another powder day. Despite the backside not being open (due to avy danger), the front of the mountain and especially the trees offered up some really fun riding for the day. I was pretty stoked to get out on the mountain with my new Burton AK Cyclic jacket. I’ve needed something Gore Tex for shredding Washington and finally got this jacket to handle the conditions here. Plus the best choice of today was wearing a helmet on the mountain. I got picked up by my buddy Erik and his friend KT. Once at Stevens, my buddy Dennis joined us for some shred laps and shared the good spots. The word from Stevens was 7 inches of new snow in the past 24 hours. We hit up Seventh Heaven to see how the snow would be at 11am and found some decent powder spots. Then it was off to Tye lift to see what was open there. We knew the backside wasn’t open but hoped we could hike […]

There are good days and then there are great days. The past two days in Tahoe have been great days, the snow finally arrived and delivered amazing powder runs. I couldn’t believe how quickly the conditions changed on the mountain and just in time for my last day in Tahoe. After dropping off my rental car in South Lake, we headed up to Northstar for the day. Yesterday was about powder on the groomers and today was about powder in the trees. There were risks underneath the snow with trees, branches, rocks…but the reward was worth it and picking your line while watching the snow for bumps was everything. Most of these pics were taken after 11am on the mountain, definitely a lot of snow for everyone to enjoy all day long. Today’s conditions were epic. The snow was light and fluffy, the coverage was getting filled in and the backside of the mountain was ideal. I had only ridden these runs earlier this season on the groomers and now could get a good feel for the wide open to tree runs that they offered up. It’s hard to capture the happiness that comes with riding powder but today I […]

Since December 20th, nine lives have been lost in North America from snowboarding accidents. At least four of the deaths have been from riding in trees either from colliding with a tree or falling into a tree well. As beautiful as winter wilderness is to look at and fun to ride in; snow and trees can create a lethal combination on the mountain. I hope that everyone stays safe this winter and understands some basic knowledge about riding in trees and tree wells in hopes it could possibly help prevent more deaths. [singlepic id=10426 w=300 h=353 float=] Educate Yourself This website is an good resource for understanding tree wells and deep snow dangers. During the winter, a trees branches collect snow but also the lower branches create a well that surrounds the tree. This hole doesn’t fill with snow and when you get close enough, you can fall into that well that is deeper than you think. Our snowboards are attached to our feet which is good and bad, it’s bad if you fall headfirst into a treewell and can’t unstrap. The more you struggle, the more snow can pile around you from the branches and you can […]

It’s hard to believe that even in April there are Winter Storm Warnings but last night we received another winter storm rolling through Steamboat delivering a powder day on the mountain this morning. During the winter on a powder day you have to get to the gondola early to get in line and start getting the powder turns but today even after 9am there was no one in line and the mountain all to yourself. Late powder dumps definitely a reward for the locals. [singlepic id=8636 w=400 h=300 float=] Since the mountain was empty, it was hard to decide where to ride. Especially when you see the open faces on the mountain, powder filled with 1 or 2 tracks down them. With the high winds, I ducked in the trees to stay warm and enjoy the powder. The trees were good but definitely with only 6 inches in some spots, you could see the crust underneath in areas. [singlepic id=8638 w=400 h=300 float=] I dressed as warm as I could and covered up in April [singlepic id=8640 w=400 h=300 float=] I ended up taking the Arbor Draft with the jib system out on the snow to see how it handled […]

I came in late last night from dinner at the Carrigan house and ended up crashing hard till this morning. During my hours of sleep, it snowed in town and delivered a couple new inches on the mountain that just got better as the snow kept falling during the day. I’ve been rocking the C2 technology on powder days which even riding a 155 Roxy Eminence in the powder it holds up and stays up. My camera was acting up today so I left it in my pocket for the majority of riding. [singlepic id=8567 w=300 h=400 float=] I did a late shred day, took my time getting up and finally headed to the mountain. It was a perfect morning for laps in the trees and luckily I ran into Becca, Rose and Jordan on the Pony Chairlift for a good shred sesh with the girls. Becca getting deep in the trees [singlepic id=8566 w=400 h=300 float=] We ended up heading down for the Rail Rodeo competition that started at 3pm near the base area. I’ll have a separate post for that with photos. Good day and can’t wait for tomorrow on the mountain.

Mother nature came through Steamboat and delivered a late season storm that dropped a couple inches on the mountain today. It was quite the surprise to wake up and notice new snow outside my house this morning. I kept to my promise of riding everyday till Steamboat closes and headed out to unsure mountain conditions (low visibility from the base). [singlepic id=8557 w=300 h=400 float=] Lev who is my co-worker joined me for late afternoon shred and we ended up finding out that conditions were much better in spots than expected. There were still some crusty/icy snow spots underneath but in areas, it was fluffy powder that was up to the knees. [singlepic id=8559 w=400 h=300 float=] It was weird to go from warm hot weather and slush riding back into winter again but definitely much needed snow for the mountain. [singlepic id=8558 w=400 h=300 float=] Today is also Gaper Day which when it snows like today…it’s the best way to give back to the locals. There were some outfits on the mountain, easily spottable but I really wonder why they went through with it when they could have enjoyed the snow much more in their own gear.
Starting the morning on the mountain makes the day so much better, I think it’s something about the morning air hitting your lungs and each turn waking you up that does the trick. I lost a friend 9 years ago on this day and thanks to him I’m a snowboarder so being on the mountain is just my way of riding for him without the sadness involved. I can’t turn back time but I can enjoy something that we did together years ago. I rode the mountain alone today and went into my favorite trees off of Pony Express. Despite the busy factor still in time, just being able to find a quiet spot on the mountain to ride alone was everything I wanted for today. [singlepic id=7741 w=400 h=300 float=] I took out the 10-11 Never Summer Lotus since I knew I’d be freeriding and finding some leftover powder on the mountain. I didn’t recognize any changes in the board from previous years, so no adjustment and it felt great to be back on the board after my 09-10 lotus was stolen.
Steamboat finally received new snow and I finally felt better to get up on the mountain to enjoy it. Friday was the perfect day to get in some tree riding before the crowds came in for President’s Weekend. My co-worker Rochelle and I both hit the mountain to get in our turns on a ride break. We headed over to the Wally World area which is popular for tourists and luckily most tourists don’t ride the trees so you can always find goodies in there after most of the more popular tree spots are tracked out. [singlepic id=7727 w=400 h=300 float=] At SIA, Tanya from Omatic hooked me up with a Extr-eco BS Technology to enjoy for the rest of the season and I finally got to see how BS Technology held up in powder. I’ve been riding the 154cm and was quite impressed with how it handled in the trees and powder…cut through and stayed above in the deeper stuff plus really easier to get from edge to edge in the trees. [singlepic id=7726 w=400 h=300 float=] Rochelle found some good powder spots and some great crashes as well.
