Since December 20th, nine lives have been lost in North America from snowboarding accidents. At least four of the deaths have been from riding in trees either from colliding with a tree or falling into a tree well. As beautiful as winter wilderness is to look at and fun to ride in; snow and trees can create a lethal combination on the mountain. I hope that everyone stays safe this winter and understands some basic knowledge about riding in trees and tree wells in hopes it could possibly help prevent more deaths. [singlepic id=10426 w=300 h=353 float=] Educate Yourself This website is an good resource for understanding tree wells and deep snow dangers. During the winter, a trees branches collect snow but also the lower branches create a well that surrounds the tree. This hole doesn’t fill with snow and when you get close enough, you can fall into that well that is deeper than you think. Our snowboards are attached to our feet which is good and bad, it’s bad if you fall headfirst into a treewell and can’t unstrap. The more you struggle, the more snow can pile around you from the branches and you can […]

It was a snowy Christmas so the day after offered up some fresh snow and not that many people on the slopes. Here’s the video from riding, it was a really fun day until the end. This was taken with the vholdr cam, still working on the angle when riding but at least it’s not all looking down now. Steamboat 12/26/08 from Shayboarder on Vimeo. I met up with Dave (who I know from snowboard.com) and his brother Brian. His other brother had binding issues and went in on our first run. We started a warm up in the Three O’Clock trees off Sundown Express. That definitely got my legs back on the board and ready for more. Dave took the shot of me riding in the Aspens We rode back up Sundown but this time dropped into the Morningside area of the mountain. Morningside is a great area, but the downside is the flatness of the terrain. Combine that with pine trees, you have more of a chance of tree wells which are very dangerous. Anytime you ride trees, make sure you are riding with people and know the area. On the […]

Made a mini-video for Saturday’s riding. I thought I had charged the battery for the helmet cam but found out on the mountain that it was turned on accidentally and dead, so I resorted to my mini camera to film what I could. One part my friends found hilarious and I didn’t think I could be that high pitched sounding. Steamboat 12/20/08 from Shayboarder on Vimeo. It was a 5 inch powder day and looked bluebird but it was a very cold day on the mountain and goggles froze up during runs. The winds were howling most of the day and my riding really sucked…I crashed more in one day than I have all season. My friends K who I ride with in summit and Brian who I know from sierrasnowboard came up for the weekend. I was surprised at the crowds, it’s the holidays but its definitely not as busy as I thought it would be but that could have been the cold keeping them inside more than outside. K in the morning, first run to the base for shredding Saturday was the first day that Morningside was open, offering up some fresh powder that was deep and […]

At Steamboat on Tuesday we had a death on the mountain, unfortunately a skier fell headfirst into a tree well and did not make it out. Here’s the article here from the Steamboat Pilot about the death. It really is sad and unfortunate when accidents happen on the mountain. Tree well deaths are really common anytime you are riding off-piste (off groomers). Definitely the responsibility of any rider/skier to learn about tree well safety. Check out http://www.treewelldeepsnowsafety.com/ A tree well is shown below in the photo. Basically throughout the season, snow piles up and creates space below the tree. If you ride close enough to trees, this space can collapse and you can fall into the tree well. Having grown up in Washington, tree wells have always been a part of snowboarding for me. The tree wells deaths I would hear about each year are tremendous and every friend I have rode with, have had close encounters of getting stuck. The snow in Washington is so heavy that if you are caught in a tree well and the snow collapses around you, digging your way out and trying to breathe is really not likely to happen. Here in Colorado, the […]
