It didn’t feel like the last day of the season but today was the last day of operations at Mammoth Mountain. Daily till July 4 and we stuck with it. The mountain ended with incredible conditions, top to bottom snowboarding and tons of people on the mountain. Like any holiday for a ski resort, I was working today but ended up taking laps to enjoy the last day and get some photos for the Mammoth Facebook page to celebrate the last day. Even though the mountain is closed, I’m not planning to be done yet. Hoping to splitboard this weekend and then call it a season.

It doesn’t feel like July on the mountain but here it is, the final countdown to closing day at Mammoth. In just a matter of days, all the snow will be a waste and the mountain will close with top to bottom riding. It’s sad but it’s also appreciated. It’s been a long winter and many of us are looking forward to summer. I could go either way, I’m looking forward to summer but also bummed the season is ending. I geared up for laps before the crazy weekend began. 4th of July here is predicted to be madness and I work most of the weekend so today’s ride break was much needed. Since I didn’t wear sunscreen, I opted to wear the airhole mask for the shred break. My last demo board of the season, the Flow Drifter got a couple days on it. The best part about this board is I rode the 11-12 Drifter at the SIA on snow in Winter Park but the board isn’t the same that I rode then. It needed fixing and was not production when I rode it, so I did not review it until it was production worthy and fixed.

Summer is almost here and each day on the mountain is a constant reminder how quickly the snow is melting. Main Park was once buried in feet of snow is now patches of dirt and Forest Trail is barely holding on. There’s a mud lake next to it just so you don’t forget how quickly it goes. But it’s fun to enjoy while it lasts! I headed out to the slopes to help with shadowing lift crew for the afternoon. I took a couple laps and ended up watching Nate Shute film Arbor Rider Pat Reddy on the big jump. Good to talk with them and see Pat continue to stomp his tricks. Of course after snowboarding, ending the day at the driving range is always a blast. Gotta say, Mammoth living ain’t bad.

Mammoth is known for its spring skiing and riding which means capturing that essence on the mountain. A couple of us headed out onto the snow to showcase the warm weather and get in some photos/videos of the amazing warm spring conditions. We have a couple perfect bikini girls that work for Mammoth and this morning was a day to capture shots for the upcoming 4th of July weekend.

It feels good to be out on the mountain. Sunny slushy turns that make you happy even if you are just riding by yourself for a bit. I headed out to help on chair #3 again, shadowing for the afternoon and getting in an occasional turn or three while doing it. [singlepic id=11999 w=300 h=533 float=] I had talked with Sean earlier this winter about trying out a DWD board and we finally got it to work out, he shipped out the board last week and I got it just in time for late season riding. It has quite an interesting graphic on it but I really like it, haha. [singlepic id=11998 w=500 h=281 float=] Forest Trail Park is still up and running but you have to take into account the super slow dirt coverage and wax your board more often.

The mountain is in amazing condition for the end of June. We finally got the heat wave and sunny skies but it’s a reminder of how quickly the snow melts when it finally does switch to summer. I headed out to the slopes to help with chair #3 operations, it’s been fun to be a liftie some days of the week since I can get laps in during my shadowing time. I ended up taking out the Flow Infinity 159 for reviews, each board is getting a couple days of ride time before the season ends. The 159cm is on the longer size range than what I’d normally ride right now but it’s treated me good for hauling and stability on the mountain. I watched Daniel hit the big spring jump and snapped this shot of him. I ended up watching Pat Reddy stomp a backside 10 double cork from the bottom of the chair! He had been working on it all day and was almost landing it, finally it came together and he perfected it at the end of the day.

It’s June 15 and I’m still walking out on the snow to go snowboarding. That’s pretty rad considering most resorts have closed for the season or aren’t open daily. Last summer I was riding Timberline and now I’m at Mammoth enjoying the summer conditions. But it’s also a reminder that the season will end on July 4 and when it does, instead of seeking year round snow…I’ll be taking a break to get into mountain biking and enjoy a late summer. Snow conditions were perfect when we headed out, the pipe was softening up and most of the snow was soft but not slushy yet. It was good turns on the mountain. I took out the Flow Quantum for the day. The guys at Flow were kind enough to leave a board bag of 2012 boards for me to try out this month and I’m stoked to be able to ride a ton of Flow boards for review. Dan took this photo of me freeriding down from the park to Chair #1 on the Quantum. I took it through the pipe and Forest Trail parks today, just playing on the jump line with it. It’ll be tested out more days […]

It’s officially my 28th birthday! For the second time in my life, I spent the day snowboarding. Luckily for me, my birthday was good because of one person. He spent the time on the mountain with me, bought me lunch and coffee, brought home a cake and decorated it and then took me to a movie. Because of him, I had a great birthday. The mountain portion was just another day, more turns and I would have liked it to be better, but it is what it is. It was fun seeing the snake run start to evolve below chair #1 in the snow. Everyone takes the same turns and builds up the course better and better each day. Crazy how fast it grows and how much fun it is!

It’s been an interesting April week for weather in Mammoth. Started out sunny and warm, turned into full blown winter and windy then back to sunny and windy. I’ve been anxious to spend more time on the Endeavor color so hit the slopes for a lunch break and shred sesh over by Canyon Lodge today. This year at Mammoth has been amazing for snowfall. Record breaking snowfall and tons of snow, about 52 feet of snowfall total and the base depth is 14-24 feet depending where you are on the mountain. Insane! I took this picture today laughing at the snow now equal with the lodge and the steps you used to walk up to, are gone. [singlepic id=11350 w=300 h=533 float=] Art Park and Canyon Lodge areas were fun. Hard to believe next week this part of the mountain will close so trying to ride it as much as possible. [singlepic id=11351 w=500 h=281 float=] The skier on the S rail set up in Main Park [singlepic id=11352 w=500 h=281 float=]

After the weekend trip to Seattle I was ready to get back on snow for some lunchtime shred sessions. The conditions are good, the sun’s been out and there’s no reason not to take a couple laps through Forest Trail at lunchtime. I hit up the mountain with Dan who was out trying his snowboard skills (usually he skis). It was also a good day to test out the 2012 Endeavor Color Series for a couple laps and adjust to the board before I start really riding it all over the mountain. I will say, this board engages into turns quick! [singlepic id=11347 w=500 h=281 float=] There’s a noticeable new jump feature in Main Park this week, a huge step over! I only got part of the jump but it’s pretty rad to watch the pros throwing down on it. [singlepic id=11348 w=500 h=281 float=] Looking forward to the rest of the week and hopefully good sunny conditions on the mountain!
