After a record breaking season, it’s no surprise that a lack of snow could be a possibility and that’s certainly the case with Mammoth Mountain right now. The conditions are early season limited runs with hardpacked snow but luckily the park is on-par. It just means sleeping in a little bit longer and hoping the snow will soften up by the time you get up. I headed up to the mountain for a session with the skier and to get in some park laps on the Wasteland. I’ve been testing out the Arbor Wasteland in the park this week. This was a reader request, so make sure you tell me what you want me to ride. Most of the day I lapped through Forest Trail park or spent time with the skier in Main Park to get shots of him. Here’s my favorite with the classic Mammoth view in the background.

Winter hasn’t ended. Weird huh but nope hasn’t ended in Mammoth yet. The mountain looks and feels like January conditions but my mind/body knows it’s June. Last weekend was pretty packed in town so I hid inside to catch up on launching Industry Profiles and blogging time. But today it was quiet and I had time to take laps before shadowing lifts. Upper mountain is perfect on snowpack but today was a firm windy day on the slopes. The cold temperatures stayed all day and kept the conditions firm. So firm that I bet the ski racers were stoked for the day. Main Park and Forest Trail are still looking great for the season. The pipe is still at the base of the mountain with no rocks or dirt showing through. Today I took out the Never Summer Premier F1 which got the harshest conditions of the season, icy hardpacked firm gripping conditions to try it out on.

The weather wasn’t supposed to be cooperating for Saturday but it didn’t matter one bit. The mix of clouds and slight rain drops didn’t impact the fun that was had. I left the skier at home (ankle injury) and headed up to the mountain to see who was around. It worked out that after a couple laps by myself, I ran into Eric and Lucien from Flow Snowboards who were up product testing for the weekend. Later on Michelle joined up with us for some laps. The mountain conditions have been insanely good. I have to remind myself that it’s mid-May and the conditions are just as good as mid-winter on the mountain. Yesterday I swung by P3 board shop in town to drop off the 2012 Never Summer Proto so they could have it as a demo board and Trotter let me borrow the 2012 Lib Tech Trice so I could try it out. This has been that one board that is always requested but I’ve been hesitant to try it because it’s a mid-wide but it’s definitely not the first wider board I’ve ridden so finally caved in to trying it out. After a couple warm up runs […]

Usually I can walk outside the building to chair 6, wait a couple minutes, run into someone I know lapping park and have a riding buddy for a couple laps. Today was not that day, waited, called, texted and nothing. Good thing I had my music to listen to. I ended up lapping 6 for a good lunch break and just having fun as best as I could without anyone to ride with. I ended up keeping the camera in the pocket, only grabbed one shot and that was my day. Looking forward to the weekend. Already planning to ride one day and take one day off. That’s the best part about spring is having at least one weekend day like a mini vacation.

I had two choices for today: take photos and watch the volcom PB+RJ finals in Main Park or stay in Art Park and mini park filming and lapping features (including trying new ones!). I chose the second option, even though the first would have been fun to check out the contest, I wanted to just get out and snowboard all day long. So sorry if you wanted PB+RJ finals coverage, I went snowboarding! I started out the morning getting in warm up laps and then headed to the mini park off Canyon to see what was there. The mini pipe’s disappeared but there’s still a couple features and a jump line. It was a good warm up to working on my park riding again. I’m just happy to ride park but I won’t be at the level to compete ever and I just enjoy it. Trying out the Endeavor Boyfriend Series snowboard for the day! [singlepic id=11362 w=500 h=281 float=] The skier and I met up after a couple laps and headed to Art Park for some filming. Mostly the filming was for him since he can hit all the features and I can only hit about half of them.
Another sunny day on the mountain without the winds howling, conditions were soft and parks were good for lapping on my lunch break. I headed out with the skier to get some shots of him in Main Park on the rails and pipe, and get some laps on Forest Trail so I could hit the jump line. Today I mounted up the NS SL for some laps, that reviews coming up and just wanted to ride it again before I start typing up the review. Forest Trail top jump and down pipe [singlepic id=11007 w=500 h=281 float=] The skier doing a truck driver in the 22 foot super pipe at Main Lodge [singlepic id=11008 w=500 h=281 float=] It’s going to be a busy rest of the week so was glad to get in some shred time…back to work the next two days before having the weekend off!

The storm took off and the sun came back out in Mammoth for a tuesday shred session. I headed out for a couple lunch laps with the skier to enjoy the soft snow and sunshine on the mountain. It’s hard to stay inside all day when the mountain is just outside the doors and it feels so good to lap the nearby lifts quickly. The skier and myself [singlepic id=11004 w=500 h=281 float=] We made a couple laps in South Park hitting the 18 foot pipe and the jib park (which is a bit above my level). I always take out the photo for capturing the skier since he hits the bigger rail lines than I do. A couple laps in Main Park were perfection with the park set up the same from Grand Prix slopestyle. They haven’t changed a thing and that means everyone can ride the course that was in Grand Prix.
I definitely wasn’t in a rush to snowboard after SIA and the on-snow, just wanted sometime to relax but today definitely felt the need to be back on the slopes in the warm sunny california sunshine. Plus it gave me a chance to ride the NS Proto again before the review goes up. I headed up to meet Pat Stahl on the mountain and we took a couple laps with Luke who did the chilean super 8 video I put up months ago. Good laps through all the parks (small to big) for us. Canyon 18′ Pipe is open! Finally!!!!
Today was the last day of Big Snow Bash which meant helping out the events crew with handing out shirts on the mountain. Lauren and myself hit up each of the main base areas, giving away Snowpowcalypse shirts to guests for the morning and early afternoon. [singlepic id=10550 w=500 h=281 float=] After we were done it was time to hit up the mountain for the end of day lunchbox session with Ashley. That’s what we call our park progression ride sessions. We lap the parks, pipes and whatever…just trying to get better. We started lapping Forest Trail, then hit up the Discopark on the beginner trail, then lapping the 22 foot pipe which is huge but has the best view on the mountain. [singlepic id=10549 w=300 h=414 float=] Ashley in the pipe. Today we did alley oops in the pipe which was fun!
Usually I have weekends off but with Big Snow Bash going on this weekend, I helped out with giving out the Big Snow Bash t-shirts on the mountain at each of the lodges and location points. It meant a day out on the mountain, in the snow and sun getting people stoked for free shirts! The 18 foot pipe being build at the top of South Park…hopefully done soon. The 22 foot pipe is too big and the 12 foot pipe is too small for me. [singlepic id=10545 w=500 h=281 float=] Snow reporter Ashley holding up the shirts [singlepic id=10544 w=500 h=281 float=] During some downtime we made our way through the art park to ride the flat box. I talked Ashley into hitting it and she did! She did awesome too! This is the Jeffy Anderson artwork and it’s soo much fun to ride on something so rad you can check out too!
