Location: Winter Park, CO Snow Conditions: Hardpacked to softpacked groomers. Setup: I rode the Union Contact Pro Bindings on the Capita DOA with my Vans Ferra Boots size 8. Time to set up the binding: These were the first bindings of the day so easily set up and adjusted. With Unions, the heelcup gets adjusted to fit my boots better so that took a couple extra minutes. Fit: I tried the Union Contact Pro bindings in the M/L sizing which fits my women’s size 8 boots just fine with adjustments. First Impression: It was my first time riding the Contact Pro’s but rode very consistent, comfortable and still capable of powering down the mountain. Appearance: The Union Contact Pros come in black/gray and purple/green. I got to ride the super bright neon purple and green colorway which was my all time favorite. Super outrageous colors but mixed well to make the Contact Pros stand out among the other bright Union bindings. Comfort: The Contact Pro bindings were good on comfort, lots of padding in the straps and absorption padding underneath below your boots. The highback design doesn’t allow for much padding but is where you need it at the lower […]

Location: Winter Park, CO Snow Conditions: Hardpacked to softpacked groomers. Setup: I rode the Union Milans on the Bataleon Whatever with my Vans Ferra Boots size 8. Time to set up the binding: No time at all, I grabbed the bindings from Union and brought them over to Bataleon to get them mounted. They were ready to go with the straps already aligned up. Fit: I rode these bindings in the M/L size which are a good fit to my size 8 Vans boots. I was able to get the straps adjusted and centered so they didn’t shift while riding. First Impression: The upgrades to the Milan just make the binding that much better. Appearance: The Milans I tried out were bright but so are the rest of the Milan color options. Super neon green with purple flare on the binding made them completely overshadow any board underneath them (no offense Bataleon). Comfort: The Milans are all about comfort for the female rider and continue to add to it with the 2013 Milan focused on padding. From the baseplate to the highback to the straps, the bindings absorb the terrain and spit it out like it’s nothing. Functionality: The Union […]

In eight years, Union Binding Company has become a major player in snowboard bindings for design, functionality and keeping it fun. As SIA was getting started, they added another big player to their team lineup…Travis Rice now joins the ranks of Union Binding riders. For 2013, Union keeps it fresh and continues with their new open toe strap design throughout the line. They’ve added a new carbon binding, the Charger for those wanting response. The 2013 Union Catalog says, “The perfect binding is more than a mechanism. It’s more than a tool. It’s more than the sum of a baseplate, highbacks, straps and hardware. The perfect binding is a catalyst to creating the ultimate connection between rider and board – and that connection spells freedom.” Well done Union. Union MC-Metafuse Metafuse Technology. Features machined coring stage III Atlas base, carbon-injected dupont zytel ST, all-new asym/symmetrical Full Carbon highbacks, precision adjustment foward lean, injected EVA bushings, metafuse heelcups, all-new 3D direct connect strap system, multi-layer tapered strap core , magnesium buckles and aluminum cage, universal disks, all new CNC anodized aluminum hardware, all-new open toe straps, dual density toe ramp padding, full carbon toe ramps, lifetime warranty base.
Location: Winter Park, CO Snow Conditions: Hardpacked to softpacked groomers. Setup: I rode the Union Charger on the Jones Flagship Carbon with my Vans Ferra Boots size 8. Time to set up the binding: This was the second setup of the day and Parker took care of it, he’s a magician when it comes to demos and turning the screws. Fit: I rode these bindings in the M/L size which fit the width of my boots and were adjusted to fit the length of my boots with the heelcup coming in a notch. The straps did fine with my Vans Ferra boots. First Impression: These bindings are the stiffest in the Union line and no joke. Be ready for response and charging the mountain. Appearance: The Chargers are sleek when you look at them. The full carbon highback is breathtaking and arguably makes you bow down to how it handles. I like the mix of orange with the binding on the ratchets and baseplate and heelcup. Comfort: The padding in the baseplate and toe ramp help cushion the ride. It’s still a lightweight binding and from what I noticed with the Jones Flagship Carbon board, there’s not as much dampening to totally pillowtop […]

100 days is the true test of wear and tear on snowboard gear. It determines whether a company builds gear for the 100 day rider or builds gear for the average snowday rider. Over the past couple years, only a couple products have made the 100 day test. After 100 days, they get the perspectives post to identify how they look after so many days, how durable they are and what the wear/tear looks like. It’s not so much a usual review but it is a judge of quality. [singlepic id=12541 w=600 h=1067 float=] Last fall, I received the Union Team Force bindings to use for this season. The Union Team Forces received over 100 days and were my main snowboard binding for the season. The only time I didn’t ride them was demo days and testing days for other brands. These bindings were production models so the same that went out to everyone else and that was a noticeable improvement in quality over samples. [singlepic id=12533 w=500 h=281 float=] Ladders/Ratchets: These are the original ladders/ratchets that came with the bindings. No issues on skipping or sticking this season. They’ve continued to work all winter long. [singlepic id=12542 w=600 h=1067 […]

Setup: I rode the Union Forces on the Capita Indoor Survival with my Vans Veil Boots size 8. Time to set up the binding: The forces were easy to mount and only took a matter of minutes with adjustments. Fit: I normally use men’s Union bindings throughout the winter so I’m used to using the M/L size with my Vans boots. The width fits and I just have to adjust the heelcup and the straps. First Impression: The Forces are dialed and the neon acid colorway was the only bright thing in the NW that day. Appearance: Neon. You either love it or you hate it. It stands out like a sore thumb and attracts eyes to your bindings very easily. I don’t remember having a choice in the color and personally I don’t care. Right now when I look at it, I wouldn’t pick that color for myself but when I rode it, the brightness was fun in the overcast grey-ish day. Comfort: Comfortable binding overall with good padding that helps absorb rougher terrain. I rode the Forces through some really choppy spots at the Holy […]

Time to set up the binding: The milans were quick to set up on the Jones board and perfect fit to my boots without having to adjust the heelcup like I would on the men’s binding. Fit: I’m used to the fit of Union bindings to my Vans boots and the women’s union milans fit my boots just fine. Minor adjustment to the straps and played with the toe strap but boot was snug into the binding with no extra space or movement. First Impression: A women’s responsive and super comfortable binding for all riding. Appearance: I ended up riding in the black version of the milans which are white on the straps and black from the baseplate to mid-level on the highback. The colorways is interesting, I don’t love it but I don’t hate it either. It’s definitely a more mellow pick for women, keeping it white on top and dark on the bottom. But for me, it beats having it look like high fashion shoes. Comfort: Noticeably padded in […]

Time to set up the binding: It was the first binding of the morning and we made sure the heelcup fit was spot on so it took a bit longer to setup. Fit: The M/L binding size works with my size 8 women’s boot but often making sure the heelcup is moved forward for a better fit. The flite’s fit fine with the width of my boot and I could have adjusted the toe strap to be a better fit to my boot. The highback fit well with my boots and I didn’t notice any pressure from the highback to my calf’s. First Impression: A very easy forgiving lightweight ride for the mountain Appearance: I was riding the black colorway which has a hint of gold to it, I found the bindings simple in the color choices and with the combination of the BSOD it matched up well together. The board did the talking, the binding just looked good on top […]

Union has begun it’s sixth year of bringing bindings focused around rider driven performance, no bells & whistles just stellar looks that ride solid. For 2010-2011, they have listened to riders wanting new toe straps with two new toe straps designed to grip the boot better. The Flite, DLX and women’s cadet features the toe strap with the gap and the Force MC, Force SL, Asadachi feature a new toe strap with a softer gripping area in the center. If you happened to stop by the on-snow at Winter Park, they were the only binding I saw on the majority of boards being tested and when you stopped by the booth there were no Union bindings to be found. I was lucky to ride two of the bindings because there were out being ridden most of the time.
