Since 1995, Unity Snowboards has been building snowboards in the center of the Rocky Mountains. The boards are designed for a variety of riding, from big mountain lines to perfect parks to award winning pipes. For 2014, Unity adds the Kapow snowboard that is one part kicker and one part powder. The Whale, Dominion, Pride, Origin, Reverse and Virgo are back with some updates in store. Unity also continues with splitboards on the dominion and whale snowboards. Unity Whale The Whale boards are a new type of surf style freeride board. On these shapes we moved the wide point on the nose of the board back to match where the nose rocker starts. This makes the board initiate a turn quicker than a normal shaped board with nose rocker. By moving the wide point back it makes the effective edge of the board shorter than normal, making the board feel shorter than it is. The Whale features our float rocker nose profile, that lifts the nose of the board up about 2cm at the end of the effective edge. The Whale boards have some camber from the front foot back to the tail. This gives it super float in deep […]

Location: Winter Park, CO Snow Conditions: Hardpacked to softpacked to powder. Setup: I rode the Unity Reverse with Technine Jib bindings and Vans Veil Boots size 8. Size: 155cm. First Impression: The reverse is fun and playful but also rides very similar to camber when carving. Weight: Average Flex: If you are expecting a soft reverse camber board, you are mistaken. While the reverse is the softest in the Unity line according to the catalog, its soft in the nose and tail but stiffer between the bindings. That makes the board handle like a camber ride while carving but also playful on the nose and tail for park or float in pow riding. Stiffer torsionally, longitudinally a range of flex but it could be the mix of reverse camber that makes it feel that way. The Reverse features Unity’s reverse camber design which has a small amount of camber between the feet and then angles up at flat angles from the foot area with 6mm of rise on the nose and tail. Turning: Easy to initiate into each turn and better response edge to edge than I expected. Definitely the longer radius turns were more favorable for me, shorter quicker […]

There are few snowboard brands built in the United States and even fewer that are built with the mountains just outside the factory. Unity Snowboards based in Silverthorne, Colorado has been handcrafting snowboards since 1995 for high quality and high performance snowboarding. What once was a freeride company is now making waves in the pipes, their boards are now ridden by Olympic bronze medalist JJ Thomas and upcoming riders Zach Black and Dylan Bidez. Despite driving by Unity thousands of times, I knew I needed to visit the factory before I left Colorado. So in the middle of packing I cruised down to Silverthorne, CO to watch the guys build the latest 10-11 snowboards that will be coming out this fall and showcase their factory to you. [singlepic id=9172 w=300 h=450 float=] When you walk into Unity, it’s a full blown factory set up in a storage warehouse. Straight ahead is two levels of factory stages and Pete’s office on the right.
Unity Snowboards is one of those snowboard companies building and riding boards in the US and based out of Silverthorne, Colorado they have a handful of mountains outside their backdoor. They’ve grown their line from freeride to park and continue to advance each of their models over the years. Unity is very much the small snowboard company but it gives you a refreshing look at how a company should be, Pete is out riding the products and when you talk to Unity you never worry about who to talk to. Chances are if you watched the Grand Prix or Dew Tour this year you would have seen three riders throwing down on Unity Snowboards in the superpipe, finally giving Unity some recognition they deserve for their hardwork. For 10-11, Unity expands reverse camber into their lineup with the Reverse, Dominion with a freeride powder rockered nose and the women’s Virgo. Unity’s Reverse and Virgo feature 2mm of camber between the feet and 6mm of reverse camber from the feet towards the nose/tail giving.
Location: Keystone, BC Snow Conditions: Overcast with hardpacked groomers. Setup: I rode the Unity Reverse with Union Forces and my Rome Vamps size 8. First Impression: Unity put out a board that handles the mountain and has a little rocker on nose and tail. Size: 155cm Weight: average Flex: The origin was one of the stiffer freestyle boards in my opinion and the reverse takes from it but with the rocker in the nose and tail, gives it a softer easy lifting flex there and between the bindings a stiffer flex, torsionally. Turning: The reverse held turns really well, I didn’t notice any problems with how Unitys rocker rode when it came to turning and it felt more like a cambered board when turning, held an edge and an arc of each turn and initiated turns with ease. The stiffer torsional flex made the sharper short radius turns more of an effort and the longer turns were perfect on it. Stable: The reverse is definitely one of the harder charging boards I rode during the demos, the flatness between the bindings and then rise on the tip and tail allow it to be stable, without feeling like the rocker is too much. It actually […]
