After the excitement of the USASA Nationals at Copper ended today, athletes and spectators were awarded the inaugural Monster Mash Invitational Pipe Jam. The Monster Mash showcased USASA alumni with some familiar names like JJ Thomas, Danny Kass, Zack Black among others. The range of riders were amateur to pro, varying in ages but all with a passion for competitive halfpipe riding. [singlepic id=8658 w=400 h=300 float=] I headed up with Maggie Rose to watch the invitational at the Copper superpipe this afternoon which was kept to a jam format with practice sessions and then riders dropping in on their own. The speakers were filled with good beats and we had announcing from the Dingo who kept us informed of who was dropping in and what tricks they were doing. Around the pipe, each fence had plenty of spectators taking in the contest and as riders made their way out of the pipe at the bottom, they had a high 5 row of kids stoked on them. [singlepic id=8653 w=400 h=300 float=] Danny Kass is always impressive to watch ride halfpipe in person [singlepic id=8659 w=400 h=300 float=] JJ Thomas [singlepic id=8648 w=400 h=300 float=] Chad Otterstrom [singlepic id=8649 w=400 […]

Timing worked out perfectly that I could spend today on the mountain just in time to check out the USASA Nationals at Copper. I did take a couple laps at Breckenridge this morning, before heading over to Copper to take in the afternoon of riding, Nationals and the Monster Mash pipe contest (look for that post next!). [singlepic id=8642 w=300 h=400 float=] Copper is holding the USASA Nationals this past week which means boardercross, slopestyle, halfpipe, racing for snowboarders of all ages competing for Gold, Silver and Bronze. I arrived to Copper, hit up the Windell’s tent to say hi to Tim Windell and then ran right into the Carrigan family where Maggie Rose had just taken home 2nd place for Giant Salom. [singlepic id=8641 w=400 h=300 float=] We headed up to take a lap on the mountain which was beautiful out today. I ended up taking a good couple laps for the afternoon to check out the events that were ending, like slopestyle and boardercross. [singlepic id=8643 w=400 h=300 float=] Boardercross start area packed with friends and family rooting on [singlepic id=8644 w=400 h=300 float=] Props to Never Summer’s RC who was in Alaska and flew back […]

Last Sunday, the USASA Nationals began at Copper Mountain. 6 days of competitions began with 1,600 amateur athletes throwing down in halfpipe, slopestyle, giant slalom, slalom and boardercross. Today was the 4th day of competitions and a beautiful bluebird day to watch the events at Copper Mountain. [singlepic id=5737 w=400 h=267 float=] The fine crew at Copper Mountain and USASA granted me access so I drove down to watch my favorite two events for the day: Halfpipe and Boardercross. It was my first time at a USASA event and I got to see some amazing riders leading the future of snowboarding. I was only able to partake in one day of competitions unfortunately but it was a great time and glad I did at least one day! [singlepic id=5738 w=396 h=400 float=] Between the Boardercross and halfpipe events, there were plenty of coaches, competitors, staff, patrol and spectators to watch the action. [singlepic id=5739 w=400 h=267 float=] The competitions started early, with riders practicing before 8:30am so I made a couple laps to see where the competitions were and headed to watch the halfpipe as the 14 years and younger boys competed. I saw some local Steamboat/SSWSC riders but […]
