It’s sad to say but I haven’t really explored Olympic National Park as much as I’d like – or at all. So when I had some downtime this weekend, I figured I would head to Ocean Shores for the weekend and spend some quality time exploring the Quinault region of Olympic National Park. I ventured into the park in the early afternoon, first driving around the North Shore of Lake Quinault which was breathtaking and felt like I was driving in a Subaru commercial. Needless to say, I rallied around the corners and loved every minute of it. Eventually I found myself at the trailhead of Lake Irely. It was a 2.2 mile round trip hike and looked like a great beginner hike. The hike had a ton of bridges, old growth and massive trees along the journey. Unfortunately Lake Irely wasn’t so much of a lake when I got there – it was completely dry. Rather than go on a further hike, I turned around so I had time to enjoy the coast in the evening. After the hike, I stopped at the multiple waterfalls along the South Shore road. They were truly breathtaking and so close to the […]

One of the perks of being back in the Northwest is being in close proximity to the Whistler Bike Park. Just a five hour drive means I can head up to Canada for the weekend and ride an amazing bike park with friends. I was pretty excited to know that I would be back in the Northwest just in time for the Whistler Bike Park opening day on May 16. Friday was the big opening day so I headed up with my friend Carrie to hit the trails together. We parked our cars at our lodging for the weekend and rode into town. We ended up taking a lap before meeting up with other familiar faces. Our group ended up being 4 girls (myself, Carrie, Janet and Rachel) lapping the park. We mixed up the trails between easy and more technical, harder. Since it was day one, it was good to get back into the swing of biking without going too gnarly. It was such a good feeling to be back on trails like Heart of Darkness, Ninja Cougar, Samurai Pizza Cat and B-Line. With the new GoFest Whistler Festival going on for opening weekend – we were able to […]

One of the best perks about launching a new version of shayboarder.com is being able to share travel experiences that go beyond snowboarding. It’s been years since I’ve been to the San Juan Islands and even longer since I was on Orcas Island so when I got the text that I was invited for a mini-vacation, I immediately changed my plans to make it happen. Accessible by ferry, Orcas Island is a true waterfront island full of fun adventures. I had spent 4th of July’s here, camping journeys and always loved the relaxing views the island had to offer. This week Capitadog and I loaded up the truck for the ferry ride to the island and met up with friends at their family home. Since I tried stand up paddleboarding last summer, I loved that it was something I could bring my dog with me along for the ride. We ended up mcgyvering a windsurf board to be a paddle board and played around most of the days padding on our knees, standing up and sitting down while cruising around on the water. It was fun to bring my dog back on the board with me, of course she prefers […]

I thought I had closed out Stevens Pass for the season when Closing Day went down on May 6 but turns out, the snow is still there and it’s too hard to resist playing on it. The mountain looked as if Closing Day never happened, there are few rock spots and still a ton of snow leftover from this winter. My buddy Nate just returned to the area after a winter in Utah and mentioned heading up for a hike/jib session. I was up for taking photos and being back on the snow even for a couple hours. We met with a couple of his friends in the parking lot to head up to the top of the Top Phlight terrain park. Hiking up after a couple days of a 101 temperature made for a really slow dizzy hike. Our first stop was one of the few jumps left in the park. Most had been melted down or destroyed so the boys started raking, shoveling and salting to get the feature jumpable. The boys ended up sessioning the jump, filming in between and working on a variety of tricks. Here’s my shot of Nate Cruise, one of the first shots […]

A snowboarding rhythm section that would be longer, higher and smoother. That was the motto for the Rhythm N Bruise contest at White Pass this year. Snowboarders from around Washington, Oregon and even California came up for the event to come get their rhythm on and have a good time in the northwest. I was intrigued by the idea of a rhythm contest and riding White Pass (which I had never gone to before) for the weekend. I knew a couple friends and familiar faces would be around plus it sounded like a good event to attend that focused on the fun snowboarding can be rather than a boring snowboard contest. Local Washington riders came out from Baker, Stevens, Crystal, Snoqualmie and White Pass to have fun with a taste of rhythm. Saturday was the practice day and Sunday was the competition, in between runs riders could hot lap the lifts and it ended up being a blast making fun runs with all the crews in town. Sunday started with a riders meeting to go over details of the event. Two runs, top winners in categories and a best method prize. Mike Cummins competed in the Cruisers/Expert men division and […]

It’s been a stormy week for the Northwest. Lots of rain in town and snow in the mountains. Stevens Pass has been getting snowfall that kept delivering powder days on the mountain. I waited for Erik to start the day on the slopes we could carpool up together. Even by the time we arrived in the early afternoon, there was still powder in spots and turns to be made. The best part about Friday snowboarding was the sun came out! I’m still getting used to the Northwest weather and definitely miss those bluebird sunny days after a powder storm. But today it was almost bluebird as the temps warmed up in the afternoon. The snow was a bit heavier than a couple days ago and required some effort to not get stuck or wipeout. I know, cause I took a good fall when I ended up leaving the snow track in a flat spot. It’s finally the weekend which means busier slopes and a chance for me to escape to the Washington coast for a couple days. Looking forward to hanging out on the sand and being out of the snow.

It was great to arrive back in Washington to fresh snow falling from the sky. The Northwest has certainly been the place for snowfall this year and it’s still coming down! I took yesterday off for a much needed down day and hoped that today would still deliver the snowfall. It did, the snow was still great on the mountain and offered up powder turns throughout most of the day. I got picked up by Jason, we met at the AAI avalanche level I course two weeks ago and talked about shredding Stevens when I got back from BC. We headed up and met up with a couple of his friends in the parking lot and ended up shredding with them most of the day. We headed for the backside of the mountain to get in our kicks. Today was a good exploration day, riding with other people and getting in some time lapping new terrain this season. Sometimes new terrain leads to powder! The riding was good, the powder was deep in spots and there was still plenty of snow falling from the sky. We ended up getting in some really good laps together. At the demos I was […]

The Legendary Banked Slalom brings out the best in snowboarding. Sure it’s a race with times and competitive streaks and bets but it also brings snowboarding together as a family. The best riders in snowboarding come to be part of this weekend because it is about snowboarding. There are no tv cameras, no commercials and it’s a humbling race that breeds support and cheers. Riders from around the world, from pipe to park to freeriders try for a roll of duct tape and the chance to ride their best on the same course as legends. We rolled up to the Mt Baker parking lot just as the first races were getting underway and Shuksan was peeking out from the clouds. Throughout the day, it was a mix of clouds, snowing and visibility but the races went on and definitely chewed some riders up in the process. One of the most impressive riders was Josh Dirksen. You just had to watch in awe how easily he made the course look, every movement, every turn was smooth and flowing through the winding rugged course. It was amazing to watch him ride and I thought his style was the best of anyone on […]
