The last day of my Whistler trip finally arrived. Cue the sad sappy music. On a good note, the sun was shining, the lines were short and the trails offered up a more loose ride for the day. Today was a day to ride by myself, fast lap with the singles line and work on what I learned from the women’s bike clinic last night. There is a photo of me riding through Heart of Darkness when I took the first jump (it was my air of the day but I got air), click here to see it with a lot of watermarking covering it. I went back to lower Duffman trail to redeem myself on the sketchy rock part that I crashed on two days ago. Redemption was won. The best part about today was trying out the Norco Aurum from Fanatik Co in town. They mentioned taking out the demo bike yesterday at the shop so today was the day. I had tried a couple bikes this summer but hadn’t found one that completely won me over. The best part is they sell their demo bikes with brand new parts at the end of the season so you […]

For the past month, I’ve been progressing in the Bike Park. Sometimes it’s been baby steps, sometimes huge leaps. I’m still moving forward, gaining confidence (and losing it on some days) but I’m always having fun. This trip to Whistler was based around coming up just in time to experience the Whistler women’s night clinics to help my progression along with coaching. A little coaching can go a long way and it seemed like it was time to work on specific skills in the right environment. Today started in the local bike shop, Fanatik Co., to purchase new grips and a handlebar. It was cheaper than a new bike and should be a short-term fix for one of the issues I’ve been having on my current setup. [singlepic id=14213 w=500 h=375 float=] After getting set up, I got in a couple laps to get used to the wider handlebar. It was a less progressive day than yesterday, I enjoyed the runs without feeling like I needed to prove myself or get wrecked. I had heard so many good things about Whistler creating a clinic that helped women take their skills to the next level. For less than $20 with your […]

It felt really good to return to the promised land of bikes and boards aka Whistler to be able to work on my Bike Park progression. I’ve been missing the carefree environment, friendly atmosphere and all-around fun that goes on in resort towns so it’s been my main mission to return as much as possible. I scheduled this trip around the Monday night ladies night so I could partake in it with three days of downhill time in the Bike Park. Sunday was my only day to ride with my friend Carrie so we hit up the mountain, warmed up on the trails we knew and then immediately she pushed me to try the GLC ramp. Because anytime you hit a new feature, thinking about it all day is going to be a mental mindfuck. We ended up doing it twice, I had one stall coming up to it the second time but still managed to do it. With more terrain open, we ended up trying new trails on the mountain. It was my first time to check out a couple trails that I wanna work my way up to (same with Carrie). One of them has the first feature […]

It was a relief to see the sunshine come out after yesterday’s wet and muddy riding day. It meant the trails would be a bit drier, easier to grip and just as much fun. I headed back to the Whistler Bike Park to get in my laps and work on technique. Since I learned to mountain bike last summer, I didn’t ride with more experienced people till this summer so now I’m starting to get the tips and techniques coming my way. It’s much needed to be able to fine tune my riding as I’m progressing. My coach/riding buddy for most of today was Dan. As much as I love riding with the girls, sometimes you gotta have a boy riding behind you yelling at you to fix this and fix that so you actually do it. It was good to have Dan helping me work on riding berms and jumps. While I was working on technique most of the day, other riders were preparing for the Wednesday night downhill race that was going to take place on B-Line to Heart of Darkness. Dan was riding the trails with me so he’d be ready for the race as well. I […]

When it comes to Birthdays, I’ve found that doing something that makes me happy is the best way to spend them. In the past I’ve gone snowboarding for birthdays so this year I decided to go mountain biking and spend a couple days in Whistler. It was exactly where I wanted to spend my birthday, having fun in the Bike Park and having a low-key day. I made my way to the base of the lifts after 10am when they opened, loaded my bike and got on the lift. On the way up, it was cool to see the Crankworx course really coming together. The course is insane. It was my first time coming up to Whistler Bike Park during the midweek which is noticeably a lot more quiet and easy flowing on the trails. I spent the morning lapping the trails I knew and getting used to the conditions again. It was raining so a lot more slick, wet riding on the trails. On my first ride down, I ended up riding 10 feet away from a deer hanging out in an open part of the trail. It caught me by surprise but didn’t startle the deer at all.
Spending a weekend in Whistler is exactly the right amount of fun regardless if it’s winter or summer. Last night we met up with a crew in Squamish for dinner before watching the Whistler vs Squamish roller derby match. Despite sore muscles from riding hard on Saturday, we headed back to the mountain to get in our laps. It was our girls crew of Carrie, Janet and myself for the day. The day started warmer than expected with some sunshine but eventually turned to overcast rain throughout the day. Most of upper mountain was socked into the clouds but lower mountain with the open trails was in good condition. The trails were drier than yesterday with some muddy spots. We mostly stuck to B-Line, Ho Chi Minh, Heart of Darkness, Hornet, Ninja Cougar…trying to think of the rest. So many of the trails interweave so you end up riding a bunch of them on one run. The pic below is right before I followed Janet to make laps on Heart of Darkness. Even though it gets super rutted, it’s probably my favorite run because of the berms, jumps and flow. It’s funny to hear the occasional sound of the zipliners […]

After riding Whistler Bike Park Opening Weekend a couple weeks ago, I knew I’d be returning as soon as I could for more downhill time. It felt really good to be back on the mountain bike getting my fix of adrenaline, heart pounding fun as I rode down the mountain. After spending the holiday weekend in Washington, I knew this weekend I’d be returning to ride Whistler again so I packed up the bike, drove the 5 hours and arrived Friday night at my friends place. Saturday’s conditions were wet, muddy and fun. The weather was constantly changing on the mountain from sunshine to rain to hail (yes hail). Having learned to bike on really dry, loose conditions…I’ve been loving the wet, muddy conditions. In the picture below, you can see the Crankworx building beginning on the lower mountain course. Pretty rad to see how insane it is. The best part about coming up to Whistler to ride has been my riding buddies. I’ve known Carrie for years through snowboarding and she introduced me to Janet who rips on a bike. We ride and have fun. It’s supportive without being competitive. I like that. For most of the day, we […]

After a great first day of riding Whistler Bike Park yesterday, I was ready for more. The weather today called for a chance of showers which meant good grip on the trails and a real chance to get muddy and dirty on the mountain. Today was just me, which meant loading up the singles line and getting my turns on my own accord. When I showed up in the morning, the line wasn’t bad at all and the singles line was smooth sailing. I didn’t even have time to worry about lifting my bike to the hook on the moving chairlift, I just did it and got it on the first try. It’s funny what freaked me out at the bike park, it wasn’t so much hitting a tree or rock but causing the lift to stop because I couldn’t get my bike on properly. But I got it, learned something new and will continue to do so. Over the weekend I ran into Michelle Leroux, the woman behind many of the communications coming out of Whistler. She was kind enough to set up a demo for me through the Whistler Rental Shop underneath GLC. I was able to take […]

Last summer I got hooked on downhill mountain biking and began my progression into something new. Maybe it was the adrenaline, heart-pumping fun that came with it but I loved riding in the dirt and craving to ride better. As winter was winding down, I started dreaming about the trails in the Northwest most specifically if I could handle Whistler Bike Park. With the Whistler Bike Park opening this weekend, it was an easy decision to head north across the border to rip up the trails with friends. I drove up to Whistler on Friday night so I could attend the “Strength in Numbers” bike film premiere in Whistler with my friend Carrie. It was the first time I’ve come to Whistler without snowboard gear; I wanted this weekend to be devoted to mountain biking and getting back onto the trails. Today ended up being a girls ride day. I joined up with Carrie (an old friend from snowboard.com days) and her friends, Janet and Evelyn. We took lap after lap from noon to closing. It’s pretty rare to have an all girls crew but the more I hear about Whistler, the more I realize how much opportunity there is […]
